I just read on a Kiss discussion board that The Orchestra advertises their concerts as ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA in big capital letters with "former members of" in small print above. The band's name, The Orchestra, isn't mentioned on the posters.
This refers to posters for a concert in Helsinki next year.
Could be the promoter being totally out of line, but surely Phil Bates should be informed about the concert posters, right?

Oh sorry, hadn't seen it. Yes, probably the same concert.
Could tl77 possibly shed some light (no pun intended) on the concert posters? Perhaps take a picture?

Janne, I'm the one who mentioned it in the KISS forum. I'm "Banks" there. Just joined this ELO forum today. I love a lot of bands to death. KISS and ELO are two of them.
The ad was in the Iltalehti or Iltasanomat magazine. Must have been last Friday, because that's when I went to the café in Hämeenlinna where I occasionally see those magazines. (I live in Turku, so I'm not there often). I remember reading about similar stuff in the guestbook on the Orchestra site, and the band had nothing to do with it. I don't think the band has anything to do with this one either. Some marketing people just are either ignorant or like to think that people are ignorant.
There were photos of the band members and it said "former this and that" below the photos. So if people bother to read the text below the small photos, they will know that it may not actually be ELO. But the marketing people could've mentioned "The orchestra" instead of the huge ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA.
EDIT:
In Tiketti.fi, where the tickets can be bought, it does say "The orchestra - ELO/ELO PART II". So hopefully it will become clear when purchasing tickets that's it's not ELO, if not earlier.

Just called a relative of mine who buys those magazines. He remembered this ad too and promised to look if he still has that issue. He told me that when he saw this Electric Light Orchestra concert ad, he tried to find Lynne's name there, but couldn't find it! EDIT: He found it. He told me it said ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA and then something about legendary former members of this and that. It did not say "The orchestra" anywhere. We live in different towns, so I don't know when I'll get it. But when I do, and when I finally have scanned it, I can send it via PM to those who are interested. I'm sure the band doesn't like to see ads like this either!!

This is sad stuff, because I don't think Phil has anything to do with this. He's smarter than that. I hope he won't get into any trouble because of this.

Phil Bates was told many times, that his gigs are announced as "ELO" or "electric light orchestra". I believed him at first, that he had no idea about that/ nothing to do with this. But now it looks like a sad running gag, as this happens way too often and now Mr. Bates could have a closer look to avoid this (if he really would be interested in it).

I guess by the time the lawyers tell them to cease and desist the venue has already gained the publicity they require and sold plenty of tickets

You're probably right. That's a weird name anyway. A band called "Electric Light Orchestra feat. Phil Bates & Band & The Berlin String Ensemble"? I suppose the idea is that the event it called Electric Light Orchestra, not the band. But this is very devious marketing. EDIT: I was replying to Skyclad1904's post.

Really shitty move. I don't believe for a minute that Bates is innocent in this, if it happens so frequently.
A friend wrote recently on Facebook: Went to see Dire Straits. Which of course would have been major news all over the world. Turns out it was some stupid tribute band, of course.
I don't mind tributes, but please advertise this CLEARLY!
