This appeared on the BBC website 20 minutes ago:
Scott Walker, one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in rock history, has died at the age of 76.
The US star, whose songs included The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore and Joanna, influenced everyone from David Bowie to Jarvis Cocker.
He found fame as a teen idol in The Walker Brothers, but his dark baritone hinted at something deeper.
That was borne out in his experimental, psychedelic solo albums, which explored the complexities of love and death.
Walker's death was confirmed by his current record label, 4AD, who called him "one of the most revered innovators at the sharp end of creative music".
On Twitter, one tribute read: "R.I.P. Scott Walker, an unforgettable voice like a cathedral lit by a sunset."

Scott Walker influenced several of my favourite performers, he had a gorgeous and unique voice and only seemed to bring out songs he really liked, rather than with the intention of making hits. Neil Hannon, in an obituary comment in the press today, said that you only have to hear him sing the first word in The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More to realise how awesome his voice was.
RIP Scott

It is very sad that Scott has died. In my list of favourite voices Scott's would be in the top three. Definitely "an unforgettable voice like a cathedral lit by a sunset."
I wasn't very keen on his later music - a bit too avant-garde for me - but I deeply admired him for making the music he wanted.
This is one of my favourites but I could just as easily find 20 more favourites -
