According to Wikipedia, Hugh taught cello to Ritchie Blackmore. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritchie_Blackmore
"In 1974, Blackmore took cello lessons from Hugh McDowell of (ELO). Blackmore later stated that when playing a different musical instrument, he found it refreshing because there is a sense of adventure not knowing exactly what chord he's playing or what key he is in."

"December 1974 - during Deep Purple's North American tour - saw Ritchie Blackmore recording a possible solo single with Ronnie James Dio and Gary Driscoll of the support band Elf. He had wanted to cover a Quatermass song, Black Sheep Of The Family, on Purple's Stormbringer album so, after the rest of the band vetoed the idea, he set about recording this himself. Other musicians who were mentioned as being involved in these sessions included Matthew Fisher [Savages, Procol Harum] on keyboards and Hugh McDowell [ELO - the Electric Light Orchestra, who were also on tour with Deep Purple] who had, it seems, been giving Ritchie cello lessons."
