It's not clear to me that the term VTR was a 'yank version' of VCR; it seems to me that the term VTR is slightly older, and was dropped in favour of VCR (not just in the US but everywhere) as the 80's progressed and VHS/Beta flooded into the market.

Asks kids nowadays and they'll say "Huh? WTF is tape?".

When they first made their appearance, these recording machines were generally known (around my neck of the woods) as "video tape recorders". The word "Cassette" being a bit posh for us simple folk

Here it is paused before he raises the binoculars to his face. It appears to be purposely blurred. Very difficult to tell, as you say.
