In the early days - before the 'sony beta' vs 'everyone else vhs' battle, there were quite a few types of video recorders with different types of cartridges/cassettes that were developed. I got to see them in the late 70's and early 80's 'cause the local pharmacist (who was filthy with money) loved to buy new 'toys' - which were always failing; he would then dump them on my older brother, who had the dubious task of trying to sort out (what was then) newfangled engineering. Early VTRs were the size of a suitcase and weighed enough to make your %^&*@ poke out. Oh no not Australia as well....

Pinched from Wiki:
The Buggles' hit song "Video Killed the Radio Star", the first video ever to air on MTV, contains the lyric "Put the blame on VTR". (end of quote).
It's not clear to me that the term VTR was a 'yank version' of VCR; it seems to me that the term VTR is slightly older, and was dropped in favour of VCR (not just in the US but everywhere) as the 80's progressed and VHS/Beta flooded into the market.
Asks kids nowadays and they'll say "Huh? WTF is tape?".

When they first made their appearance, these recording machines were generally known (around my neck of the woods) as "video tape recorders". The word "Cassette" being a bit posh for us simple folk

How can THIS have passed me by...
Probably because I've never seen Electric Dreams smileys-whistling-823718
I was looking up another band on YouTube, and this was listed as one of the options. Intrigued, I listened... listened again... and listened again...
It's a bit good! My fave jl solo track

Difficult to say - so grainy and low res. Problem with the 80's - what with the shoulder pads, frizzed long hair and loud shirts - everyone looks the same! Here it is paused before he raises the binoculars to his face. It appears to be purposely blurred. Very difficult to tell, as you say. Attachment Deleted
