We are currently (no electricity tho!) in a wine-growing area - yesterday we drove past a large vineyard where the bushes were draped with tinsel (to scare the birds which steal the grapes). The tinsel made the vines look quite magical in the afternoon sun. Inspired by the veiw, I quipped that those vines must be used to produce 'sparkling wine' (i.e. champagne).

Will enjoy being at home tomorrow night. In past years I've usually had to work on New Year's Eve... and yes, when London's famous clock, Big Ben, appears on TV, striking midnight, one of us has to solemnly subtitle the "bongs"!

What, you actually have to write "BONG!" twelve times? I love it!

Eloneen, that's very good news. Wish your mom a Happy New Year from one of the Ninja's! ...and from the other ninja too, very pleased to hear you and your mom are safely back home and all is well Hope everyone enjoys New Year's Eve however you celebrate it, I'll be here as usual as I'm too mean to pay to get into pubs that are normally free and much prefer me own booze and the remains of the Christmas food - cheers! Thanks, Uno! Happy New Year to you, as well!!

Heh, not quite. But we do have to cue out a suitable phrase, something like BIG BEN CHIMES, for the viewers who can't hear what's going on. Even during news and sports programmes, you're supposed to put in descriptions of incidental music, etc, so the viewers don't miss a thing.
A few years ago, when gay marriage became legal, the news coverage suddenly went live to one of the first gay wedding ceremonies. A rather strait-laced colleague of mine panicked at the sight of the congregation all belting out a hymn, and added the helpful description GAY SINGING.

vlogdance, have you thought of creating a blog writing about those memorable subtitles? You are a master of word play, I'm sure you've snuck in a few.

Glad to hear that news, eloneen ! For an update of my New Year situation: one of my friends' brothers just whatsapped me saying that my friend along with all the other members of their family and the Europeans have travelled to a place close to Mar del Plata to spend New Year there, and that he wasn't willing to go with them so he stayed here. So as a result he didn't have anyone to spend New Year with, and he has his parent's house (where we always spend New Years) at his disposal. So I told him I'll go there and we'll make an asado, even if it's just for the two of us, and jam a bit with the guitars. Then we'll go out for beer. Problem solved. You mean you are not coming? I got the cider and nibbles in especially!!!!! Oh well, more for me.....

The latest group of visiting relatives just rolled out tonight. Two quiet days and then the big group (oldest brother, with his daughter (who shares a birthday with JL!!), her husband, and two kids) comes back for round two! The great thing about having my mom here with us is that we don't need to travel to visit family during the holidays. We do end up spending a good part of the break entertaining, and we have to find time to "power down," rest up, and take time for ourselves. My family is extremely lively, "dynamic," and extroverted. Hubby and I are pretty boring in comparison, but at least we have each other! I think our son is somewhere in between.

vlogdance , have you thought of creating a blog writing about those memorable subtitles? You are a master of word play, I'm sure you've snuck in a few. *whispers* Ahem! We're not really supposed to mention our mishaps on social media - it doesn't look good for the company. So no blog. I haven't even given in to the temptation to put ELO song titles into the news (although once, in the rugby, when someone scored a try, the commentator really did shout "It's over!")

We're not really supposed to mention our mishaps on social media - it doesn't look good for the company. Though I recall that day in London you told me a few very funny stories about gaffes that your colleagues had, Vlog bach (well, at least the story went that it was your colleagues ). Besides, we are so few here that I don't think this counts as social media. It's more like social quarters, or antisocial media. A few years ago, when gay marriage became legal, the news coverage suddenly went live to one of the first gay wedding ceremonies. A rather strait-laced colleague of mine panicked at the sight of the congregation all belting out a hymn, and added the helpful description GAY SINGING. This is brilliant! Talk about a conservative...

So, it's going to be 14 F overnight--very cold for our neck of the woods (I'm sure BSJ is not impressed), and the young man is not interested in going to First Night, the big celebration we usually attend on New Year's Eve. He says that it's "boring" to do that again this year... My baby is growing up!! We'll probably go to a movie this afternoon, then home for dinner and then to the Watch Night service later on, depending on how Mom is feeling tonight. If not Watch Night, we'll stay home and watch the fireworks and ball drop in NYC on TV, do our little champagne toast with hugs and kisses, and call it a night. There are also lots of folks who like to shoot guns at midnight to celebrate New Year's, too, so that's something else besides the drunk drivers to look out for...

14f is about -10 so that's cold! I thought you lived in the southern part of the US?

NC is in the south, but not the "Deep South." We typically get a few days like this in this part of the state each year, but usually nothing worse. This is a pretty bad cold snap for us for this time of year- the coldest New Year's Eve night in over 40 years. A few hours west in the mountains, they get lots of cold and snow each winter, and on the coast (south and east of us), it's typically warmer than it is here in the central part of the state. Lots of variety here in NC.
