I was thinking the same thing!! Here at our house it's been gumbo (Louisiana folks here), French toast and shrimp and grits for breakfast, with some turkey and ham and other various foods thrown in for good measure --all signs that Grandma has taken over the kitchen! I'm taking a break from cooking and letting my mom entertain her sons and their families/significant others this week. It's been nonstop entertaining of family since Dec. 22, and it will end after New Year's Day when my oldest brother stops through again with his family on his way back home from points further south. If the past is any indication, Mom will overdo it, and she will be exhausted just in time for the holiday break to be over... I'm enjoying the reprieve!!

I've been back at work for two days and caught a cold from Christmas visitors so festivities seem quite far away now...still plenty of goodies to scarf down though

Getting a cold during a holiday break stinks ! Take care, unomusette ! One of my brothers who's visiting now is sick, and I'm trying not to catch his bug. Everyone else is healthy so far, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm going to have to go out and buy some normal, healthy food --like fruits and veggies for example! All this rich food for days and days on end is not a good thing...

Today was the last working day of the year and the last before the courts summer recess (it lasts all January). I've been working against the clock to finish a big presentation I needed to file in this year. It ended up being movie-esque, as I finally filed it in the last day (today), half an hour before the court closed. I was already on a not-too-loose schedule and my escapade to the country didn'd help things. Now, peace! Finally. Hope I'll be able to be be around more and help make it less quiet on here.

What is everyone doing for the new year? Mrs T and I will be staying in with our son (daughter went back home 2 days ago 'sniff'...) and celebrating the new year with nibbles and wine and son's new found passion-vodka!

We haven't decided yet, but we do have some family traditions.
For years, we've all bundled up with my son and my godson, and maybe a friend or two, and headed out to Raleigh, our state capital, for some special free New Year's festivities that last all day up to midnight. There is a big arts festival downtown all day on 12/31, and all of the state museums stay open late. We usually hang out there, and then, leading up to the children's New Year's acorn drop at 7:00 PM (Raleigh is "The City of Oaks"), there is a parade and a mini outdoor concert. We do the kids' countdown at 7:00. We do not stick around for the grownup celebration. Our son may not be interested any more. We'll see.
We usually go home right after that to avoid the drunk drivers on the road. We watch the Times Square ball drop on TV and have a little champagne toast and hugs and kisses to ring in the new year. Hubby and I usually try to go out on 12/30 or on 1/2 to avoid the crowds and the higher prices in restaurants, as well as the drunk drivers. Since he's working, we might celebrate even later this year.
The church that we attend takes part in an annual African American tradition called Watch Night, which commemorates the anticipation of the legal emancipation of enslaved people on January 1,1863. People gather in churches late in the evening on 12/31 up until midnight, for special commemorative services.
Hubby grew up with this experience, but I did not, so I may participate this year along with my mom and our son, and make this a new tradition for us.
We're still not in New Year's mode yet, but in the lazy in-between time.

Mrs T and I will be staying in with our son (daughter went back home 2 days ago 'sniff'...) and celebrating the new year with nibbles and wine and son's new found passion-vodka! I really don't know. I've got nowhere to go to be honest. In my family it's Christmas together and New Year each by separate. I've been spending New Years since long ago with a friend's family who live 10 blocks away. To describe it correctly, I'm mostly friends with every member of his family in our own right, and in fact during many years when my friend was living in Europe I spent it with his family all the same, without him being present. This year they are receiving some friends from Europe and they are probably too busy with that, because so far I haven't received the already traditional invitation, and I haven't got plan B. After 12 p.m. I'll surely have a few friends going out and stuff going on, but until then what do I do? I'm thinking of googling for a bar where people in my same situation go, there has to be something... ♪♫ Oh, that magic feeling... nowhere to go... nowhere to go! ♫♪ (now I can relate to my favourite song from the biggest band in history).

Helmut83 Tinsel is a kind of shiny foil decoration that is common at Christmas, so I'm pretty sure you didn't eat any... unless there are some special Argie traditions that I don't know about!

Also staying at home with the wife and kids, we will probably all end up either in the hot tub or an upstairs bedroom watching the fireworks at midnight. Usually Mrs Wimp has been working and so will fall asleep on the sofa, should be around on the forum Helmut83 if you don’t manage to get out.

Right now, I'm at a hospital emergency room with my mom, who has had some nasty complications from one of her medications. Not a life-threatening crisis, though. We are in wait and see mode in terms of other plans right now.
