I just wanted to know if Roy was a popular figure in the USA during the early 70s? The Move had a degree of fame and popularity there in the 60s but chart wise,Roy and Wizzard did nothing. Were our non UK friends aware of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day and See My Baby Jive etc etc back then? We in the UK grew up with those songs especially IWICBCE at Xmas time, was it ever played any where else?
Apart from one mention (on an episode of The Goodies : 'The Goodies Rule Ok?'); here in Oz I'm afraid that Roy made little impact.
As far as Xmas stuff; we get George Micheal's 'Last Christmas' and Slade's one as well (to death) - but no Roy.
Truthfully in between the abovementioned episode of The Goodies (about 1975) and an appearance (in a tepee) on an episode of the 'Two Fat Bikers' (The Hairy Bikers to you) from a few years ago, anyone in Oz would be hard-pressed to know RW existed (except via ELO).
I recently asked another poster on this forum to explain RG's career to me ('cause I really hadn't had any exposure to him) - I'm afraid that person rather took offence - but honestly Roy never worked (in any sense of the word) here.
I had never heard of Roy Wood until I started listening to early ELO music, and I had never heard any of his music apart from ELO until recently. I don't really have much interest in the pre-ELO music of ELO members. Maybe one day.
In spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. --MLK, Jr.
Same here, Wizzard appealed to me more as a 10 year old than ELO could ever do at that time.
Same. Roy is very appealing to kids, much more so than Jeff was to me at that age.
I was a big Roy fan before I got into ELO because of ' I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day'. I remember it used to be played over the ads for Christmas Children's BBC programmes and I always loved it. It got me into the mood for the holidays - and kids DO wish it could be Christmas every day! A couple of years later I had to learn it in music class at school which made me love it more because I now knew all the words. "Frosticles" indeed.
Mum also loved Roy (it was the face paint and costumes). I used to think we were the only people who liked Roy/Wizzard's music and that he was some kind of one-hit-wonder chap who only ever appeared at Christmas, like Jona Lewie. I bought mum a Roy Wood Greatest Hits CD as a present, completely ignorant of the Jeff Lynne credit on '10538 Overture' until much later and too ignorant about the other tracks on that CD that were not 'IWICBCE'. Had I not loved Woody first I doubt I'd love Jeff now and had Roy been more 'mainstream' and popular back in the day I doubt either me or my mother would have been as keen on him as we were.
The song was developed in late 1973 under the working title of 'Honey Pie'. Always mindful of current trends, the arrangement was heavily influenced by the contemporary glam rock, in particular Roy Wood's 'See My Baby Jive'. As such, it's something of a 'wall of sound', with massed banks of saxophones and heavily reverbed guitars.

Grroosss: Well. I discovered r/ELOcirclejerk and the ELO Discord yesterday. Lots to offer (and fans my age!) but too much chaos to take in all at once... Feels good to be back home ::animated-smileys-hug-008::

Helmut83: Is there an ELO Discord? Good data, Grroosss! Gotta check it out, I've been a regular at discord since about two months ago when quarentine boredom drove me there.
