Here's a foto of JL from the Warbling Trilburys era....
As you see, JL is wearing a shirt with a list of names on it.
The list is of a fictitious football team 'Barnstoneworth United' from an episode of "Ripping Yarns" (1979) called 'Golden Gordon'.
Ripping Yarns was a short-run comedy series on the BBC in the late '70s written by Michael Palin & Terry Jones (from Monty Python).
Like much of the output of the Pythons, various bits of Ripping Yarns became the subject of rote-learned quotes for fans - including the list of football players on JL's shirt.
What IS interesting is that the photo must date from the late 80's, ten years after Ripping Yarns was broadcast.
The episode in question:
(cameo of John Cleese at 22.50).

Love 'Ripping Yarns' I have the box set of all the shows. 'Howard Moleson's got a new shovel...he put it next to the other one!'
My favourite episode was "Murder at Moorstone Manor"; I can remember watching it as a late teenager (with my parental family) - I was rolling on the floor with laughter, peeing myself, while the rest just sat there in stony silence.
They're all dead now, but I suspect they were already dead then.....
I suppose JL was wearing that shirt as a private gag with R.O. - Roy was reportedly a big Python fan too.

It were always raining in Denley Moor, except on days when it were fine; and there weren't many of those - not if you include drizzle as rain. And even if it weren't drizzling, it were overcast and there were a lot of moisture in the air. You'd come home as though it had been raining, even though there had been no evidence of precipitation in the rain gauge outside the town hall......

I was going to say that - my Mum and I still quote it at each other when something is very black I think Tomkinson's Schooldays was my favourite though.
