I know Jeff likes the music to do the talking, but why no stage banter at all?
It would be great if he could add bits about the songs:
”I wrote this in seven minutes.”
”This was the first song my father liked.”
”Bev always messed up when we played this in the 70’s.”

my view ... shy and nervous on stage ... didn't do it in the 70's either as far as i can tell. maybe the in-ear monitors means he keeps it short and simple

I too wish that he would engage with his audience a bit more, rather than all those, long (slightly awkward) silences between songs, he even had Mike Stephens introducing the band. It was Bev who fancied himself a bit as a front man and who used to do some announcements and chat with the audience. Still, it's not going to change now and it's a small price to pay for what you get instead.

I'd much rather just have the music than a lot of the waffle you get from some performers.

I've seen multiple gigs on the same tour by biggish bands where there was between-songs banter and it was the same every night. The spoken parts were just as rehearsed as the songs. Some, like Jeff's, with hardly any conversation, and others where the performers are genuinely chatty and it's different every night. It boils down to personalities I suppose, but I prefer to have no chat at all than the rehearsed stuff.

Well, it was as "live" as the songs I suppose. With a really big band most of the audience will only see them once so the banter might sound off-the-cuff to them. The hardcore fans who see more than one gig on a tour must take it on board.
I'm a Muse fan and with them what annoys hardcore fans more than the lack of chat is the sameness of the setlist. Nobody expects any between-song comments, everyone knows they don't do it so we don't expect it. If we get it we know it's genuinely spontaneous and feel kind of blessed.

Best I've seen for banter is Neil Finn/Crowded House...I even managed to blag my way up on stage to play a song with him on his last UK tour

They were always excellent, it was almost like a comedy act at times. One night they even brought a tv on stage because there was some football final on then proceeded to turn it to themselves so no-one else could watch it Of course Paul Hester had a tragic ending which was so so sad, it really lost a dynamic after his passing.

I've seen Procol Harum a couple of times this year and recently been to see Joe Brown and both their banter was almost equal to the music. I love this. It's always great to hear some stories and performers opinions and it makes you feel as if you are sitting in their living room having a drink with them rather than being in a concert venue.
Jeff however has always been a lot more cautious and careful. I put this down live to him wanting to concentrate on perfecting the music. While Joe Brown could get five minutes worth of jokes from a wrong note I'm sure it would kill Jeff being the perfectionist he is.
Sure even the most off the cuff banter might be rehearsed but then all the best comedians remember their best jokes, it doesn't make them any less fun. But what I do dislike is all the bland "hello London", "how are you all feeling", "here's one from the next LP" stuff. The few words Jeff does say in shows is always pertinent and to the point and most of all absolutely true. His quietness might put off some new fans but old ones will know him well enough to hear his communication by telepathy.
Also, in the arenas and large venues Jeff is currently playing a lot of chat seem pointless. Who can believe Wembley is anyone's lounge? If Jeff were to play a small venue that's when I'd want to hear more talk (and also for him to take requests!)

Jeff has always had a very dry sense of humour, which I feel perfectly complements his self-deprecating manner, and as has already been pointed out he's not going to change now! For me the music does all the talking!
