It's almost like we should make a separate folder for Tom Petty in the Music folder, since he was so tied to Jeff Lynne. ? (Just an idea I'm throwing out there, HW, if you think it might be a good idea.)
I have to admit, I really feel a sense of grief and loss; this guy was really the one most everybody can relate to, it seems like. Perhaps one of the most un-pretentious artists ever.
Probably all have so many fond memories and anecdotes, of all his music and career, and what our favorites, etc.
One thing I really gotta say, Jeff was a great producer for him; and for me personally "Highway Companion" is 100% solid all the way throughout, of a really mature and reflective Tom Petty. This one goes down really good for me, every song. Definitely my favorite Tom Petty album.
I'm really enjoying reading the original thread on Tom Petty. Just starting another fresh one here, for all about memories, thoughts, and reflections, maybe like one of those collages of pictures they put up at a funeral wake.
Jim

It is an awesome article; really enjoyed it. You can really see his humility in it, how he keeps the focus on Jeff throughout, and doesn't divert to himself much. Jim

Many, like myself probably never heard Tom Petty until Jeff became involved with Him. Even though ELO were no longer at that point, the late 80s were great times if you were a fan. Jeff , George ,Tom and the Wilburys' got loads of airplay. One radio show that comes to mind here in the UK was the Saturday sequence on radio 1. Full Moon Fever is fantastic, and also Into the Great Wide Open. I went on to see TPATHs at Wembley Arena for that tour and still have the tea shirt... Great times..

This has been a rough week. But Tom's music is getting me through it all. Tom was very philosophical, even if he never intended to be. I found these quotes from him, some of which are sadly ironic...
"You get into your late fifties, people start falling like flies all around you. I don't take life for granted any more. I'm really glad to be here. "
"If you're not getting older, you're dead. "
"I don't think it's a good attitude in your life to feel that you have to be rich to have self-esteem. "
"I think television's become a downright dangerous thing. It has no moral barometer whatsoever. If you want to talk about something that is all about money, just watch the television."

A really beautiful song from Tom and the Heartbreakers 2010 album "Mojo". Kind of similar to "Learning to Fly".

Here's Tom, performing for a 'special kids' school benefit way back in '94.
Thanks TP - you will be missed.

I imagine if you're all like me, once or twice in the pinch the song "I Won't Back Down" gave you the motivation to muscle through a tough situation? I remember getting laid off from a job I started at a contract house, and then making my case really strong why it was wrong, and then the contract lady talked with them to let me stay on, since it was just one guy being a jerk. I remember that song was in my mind and helping me be determined. Jim

elophile I was thinking the same thing. I remember one stretch about ten years ago when I was utterly miserable in my job; it was during the winter, and I had to get up early and drive to work in the cold darkness. Listening to and singing "Hold on Tight" as I cried in the car on the way to work took the edge off the misery for me. The TP song is about resistance, and the ELO song is more about perseverance and optimism, for me at least.
