I have to agree with mrradio I'm afraid. Apart from Lee Pomeroy on the bass, there are no 'characters' or personalities in the band, I wrote in another thread about missing the likes of Hughie and Mik doing their thing. I can't say that in the future that I will be talking about the female cellists and violinists in the same context. The current band are all superb musicians but it is just Jeff and a backing band for me, not ELO... Well, I think the new band has some personality, and the sheer number of people on stage makes it interesting, in my opinion. I also have a special fondness for the classic 7-man lineup from the mid 70s -early 80s. I doubt, though, that given their current age, that any of those guys would be running around the way they used to 40 years ago. I don't think I'd like some youngish guys running around acting like Mik and Hugh on the current tour. I still have that nostalgia for "my ELO" but I think the hard truth is that that is decidedly a thing of the past, for many reasons...and now we have "Jeff Lynne's ELO" the only ELO that currently exists.

I still have that nostalgia for "my ELO" but I think the hard truth is that that is decidedly a thing of the past, for many reasons...and now we have "Jeff Lynne's ELO" the only ELO that currently exists. I agree with both of you. Fair comment. Admittedly ANYTHING with Jeff is better than NOTHING and I know it's not realistic to expect all of the surviving old band members to be called into duty but he could put a new, more vibrant Jeff Lynne band together that has some edge and doesn't feature the obvious, token, "eye candy" string section for starters. Most of the musicians have zero rock and roll appeal - Mike Stevens looks like a smiley bank manager with an acoustic guitar and the male backing vocalist who also sings some lead is inexplicably bland. The dearly missed Kelly Groucutt could run rings around them all. Yes, it's "Jeff Lynne's ELO" which, after all, is not the same as Electric Light Orchestra but it boggles the mind to think that Jeff - at his age - couldn't put the bad blood behind him once and for all and invite Mik Kaminski and Bev along as part of his backing band. Basher Bev is far from the world's greatest drummer (!!) but for some reason his playing fitted ELO. The guy he has now appears to have no idea how to swing the hats on the chorus of Sweet Talkin' Woman, despite being a competent player. Anyway sorry to digress from the original topic. In short, if Jeff wants to use a new "young" band then at least get some musicians with balls and stage presence and leave Take That's backing band for the anodyne world of Gary Barlow and co. And PLEASE change up your set list !!!!

The eye candy is the only redeeming feature for me!

the obvious, token, "eye candy" string section for starters. They're clearly talented musicians in spite of being ladyfolk and being attractive. Would you still call them "token" or "eye candy"? if they were attractive young men?
