"Stream of Stars" and "Lucky Motel" are both very unique songs, so maybe that's the direction some of the new stuff is taking.

It isn't ELO and its not necessarily in keeping with his solo material...it's "new Jeff"...who knows where this is going? ! For instance who forseen Long Wave? Track like beyond the sea?! I have to admit when I heard "She" by Elvis Costello in the movie Notting hill, I did think Jeff coul do a magical rework of the track! And so he did! I could have come straight off Armchair!

Jeff Lynne Sings the Hits of the Beatles. Bad title for an album I know but I'd love to hear his versions of more Beatles tracks. ELO's 'Daytripper' is very far removed from the original and the only person to sing 'Something' lovelier than George is definitely Jeff.
Now I've mentioned it, maybe it is a bad idea. What makes Jeff/ELO's Beatles covers special is their rarity. But the fact still remains, Jeff's cover versions are always more inspired than most other people's.

That has seemed to be the case, but the unfortunate side of Lynne working with the Beatles and it's members during their solo careers is that that work appeared to greatly overshadowed his own material and newer ELO material, especially during the early 2000s. ... I'm still patiently waiting for another Idle Race album that sounds like it was recorded in the late '60s with vintage equipment and instruments.

I have often thought (fantasised) that album!

I thought Armchair Theatre contained some hints of The Idle Race, especially Nobody Home, with it's 60's R&B feel.

Speaking of the Idle Race, other than on 'Jungle' I can't think of any ELO song that shows the same sense of humour displayed on Jeff's Idle Race recordings. Maybe this is because those type of songs were rooted in the late 60s but I'd like to hear some echoes of his former band on his new record.
