ShardEnder, How in the world do you know all that? I'm impressed! Where did you find all that information? Thank you for sharing.

I like that song! PowWow, You must hear something in that song that I don't. Would you please share what it is that appeals to you? Jeff must have liked it which is why he included it but I just don't hear it. I'm not criticizing your taste, I'd like to be a fan of the song or at lease not cringe when I hear it.

The vocal refrain of "cheap!" "cheap!" , the quirky synth intro and the jivin' beat/time-signature... also the sound affect between the choruses is Jeff saying "train of gold" speeded up really really fast!

The reason why there are so many instances of sped-up vocals and repeated samples throughout the whole of Secret Messages - and its many outtakes - is because Wisseloord Studios had just taken delivery of a brand new AMS RMX16 digital effects rack, which Jeff used like a child with their latest toys on Christmas morning! Also, Dave Morgan brought his custom DMX (affectionately known as "Dennis") to the sessions that was modified* so it could load anything rather than just being able to play the standard library. I would list the most notable examples of where the RMX16 and DMX were used, but I'd prefer to keep it all for my upcoming book. To cut a long story short, the fact is that Jeff went a little crazy with these and the OB-Xa around this period, virtually every track having at least one of the tools I've described at the heart of its production. If all goes to plan, I'll be providing a song-by-song breakdown of how Jeff achieved the majority of the effects on Secret Messages, Time and Balance Of Power, thanks in part to a few helpful insiders plus a lot of research...
*Although every DMX owner would soon be able to do the same when Oberheim released documentation and the necessary interfacing tool, such a feature put Dave's model on the very cutting edge for mid-1982. Indeed, he continued to showcase Dennis on the Earthrise material, with Zero Zero and Spaceship Earth in particular demonstrating its capabilities.

On the sticker that emblazoned the front of the Secret Messages LP, at least in the US, Train Of Gold is listed as one of the featured tracks, listed 3rd, under Rock 'n' Roll Is King and Four Little Diamonds, and over Bluebird. So someone at Jet was thinking of Train Of Gold and Bluebird as potential singles, when in the end neither was the 3rd US single and Stranger was released instead.

Even though it was technically listed as the b-side of Stranger, I'd rather consider Train Of Gold as part of an unofficial double a-side single release, since both came from the same album. I've yet to read the original article, but Kelly supposedly told a magazine that he felt Beatles Forever was the likely first single from the upcoming new ELO album. Indeed, both this and the eventual single, Rock 'N' Roll Is King, were started during the group's initial "flying visit" to Wisseloord that also included Train Of Gold (along with No Way Out) - all still featuring Kelly on background vocals. My guess is that Jeff wanted to give the impression of Kelly being more involved with the entire project than he really was, hence the bassist returning for the promotional videos and band shots, not to mention the remark confirming his ongoing involvement as late as that solo appearance on American Bandstand, just a few months before the settlement made out of court in October '83. On the other hand, would Jeff have been able to fully dismiss Kelly while the legal case remained unresolved?
