Horacewimp : if that's a friendly elephant, I don't want to know how an aggresive one looks like. Massive beast. But seriously, his body language doesn't suggests he is too friendly, he seems to be in a defensive attitude. Interesting photos of Zambia. And talking about planes, congrats for having the courage to ride that one, it looks like a bunch of old rusty twisted metal pieces. Massive Victoria Falls. Now you know 2 of the 3 biggest falls in the world: Victoria and Niagara. Now you should know the last one (and bigger of the 3). Do you know where is it?

Such a small teaser, let's see what comes next... Right, this is in the way of an introduction, a test (of photo size) and a tip. The tip is, when you visit Venice via Marco Polo airport you should always try to sit on the right hand side of the plane, because as you come in to land you have an amazing aerial view of the city ...provided that you are not like me and have fear of flying. There's nothing that gets me more on my nerves than looking through the window and seeing how far above the land I am. Well, you clearly don't have that problem, lucky you.

Was thinking the same about zee plane! The croc, for some reason, made me laugh. I'm thinking that's a zoom shot of the elephant? Nice shot of Victoria Falls. I can hear it. (The third largest fall? When one of H W's tenants plugs up the bano! )

The plane was a twin engined Beechcraft Baron we hired, we had to do that because we were flying into Rhodesia and they wouldn't allow flights from Zambia to land, we had to fly under the radar and landed on a small grass strip, this was after the locals had chased the monkeys off it!! On the way back to Zambia we had to fly in via Malawi. We had many plane experiences on this trip, on the way out from the UK we were supposed to land at Nairobi to refuel, we landed only to shoot back up, the pilot said we had run out of runway due to the fog. With fuel getting low we struggled to Uganda and landed at Entebbe to be taken under armed escort to the airport lounge, Idi Amin was in power, my Mum and Dad said it was horrible as a kid I didn't know better. That was the local name for the elephant, the picture was taken from the car, no zoom. The other falls are in my book, they are in Argentina

Wow! What and adventure! I would have aged 20 years going through that planes experience.
That area of Africa is dangerous today, I can't even imagine in those times when there were so many cruel dictators and civil wars, and so many tribes of natives were killing each other.
That's right! You've got to complete the treble some day!

Great Zambian pics and tales Horacewimp - especially Victoria Falls. As for Uganda, I remember it being legendarily dangerous. Glad you all made it back in one piece. Eek, hope you were living above ground floor level vlogdance....

*Fanfare* Well, here goes with a tale of our recent trip to Venice. Once free of the airport we'd treated ourselves to a shared water taxi transfer across the lagoon, more expensive than the usual shuttle boat but much quicker and way more glamorous. There is a pic of us on it but it failed my stringent tests (I looked dreadful in it) so here's a pic of one which passed us some time during the trip - we stood up at the back and could see the city revealing itself to us but this did result in ruination of hairdos and screwing up of faces. Our hotel was right on the Grand Canal and although our room was on the side it was near the front so you could look out of the window to this view If this posts alright it should be a panoramic view from the roof terrace, it was amazing! Here we are outside it, I think it's the first day as after that we wore a whole lot more in the way of fleeces, hats and scarves, it was blimmin' freezing! We dropped off our stuff and set off to explore, a shopping street runs parallel to the Grand Canal but you could nip down to the water's edge like this This was taken from the bridge you can see in the background of the last pic Our hotel is on the left bank, somewhere just around the corner. The two boats you can see on the Grand Canal, one coming towards you and one going away, are vaporettos - kind of the buses of Venice and most useful for getting about although it can take a while as some of them stop at every single opportunity to let people on and off. But you could use them to go quite far afield and on some you could sit right up at the front and pretend you were driving it. Everywhere you go there are shops selling Venetian carnival masks, mostly mass produced (in China probably) but some were more serious, such as this one which specialised in animal masks Gondolas were everywhere, mostly quite plush like this one but it was so cold the gondoliers sensibly wrapped up and didn't wear the traditional costume much As you wander around there's quite a lot of interesting stuff like this on the walls Lots of the shops were selling things made from expensive Murano glass, these were really cute and must be devilishly hard to make This shop window made us hoot too After all this wandering around it was getting dark but we found our first bargain eatery just off the tourist drag at the Rialto Bridge - ChipsAmsterdam! Here, for 3 euros, you could have a "small" cone of proper Dutch chips which was blimmin' enormous, with yet more chips skewered on long sticks and stuck in the top and a choice of about 12 different sauces, yummy! Here's me giving it the seal of approval and the cheery staff who were keen to be remembered Having stocked up on cheap beer from the Co-op, we'd promised ourselves a nightcap on the roof terrace, but now knowing how cold it was going to be the dress code was "sensible" And thus ended the first day. During this day we also discovered the best bar in Venice, and many interesting stories would arise from our frequent visits. But that's for another instalment...

the terrace! You gone and done good traveling on the cheap. How did you navigate through that crazy city? Know someone who was just there, could have been the same time as you. No, it was rainy. Anyway, they were so afraid of getting lost, they didn’t stray far from their hotel. What are chips? Love those two cute goofs. Great shot of Mr and Mrs Unomusette, showing Horacewimp, and me, the art of taking selfie's. More please.....

Finally the famous photos which went through the filter system are here! And they didn't disappoint! What a pretty city, despite how little practical it must be for the daily life having all of those canals, the charm it has can be even seen in the photos and I can imagine it must have been bigger in person. Look at that bridge for example, it's gourgeous! I was really surprised by the couches and chairs that guy kept in his gondole, really stylsh and elegant. They look more like something you'd expect find in the living room of an antique villa than in a small vessel. I wonder if he's not afraid the water and salty air would damage them. Uno, didn't you buy any of those masks? They look amazing! If there wasn't one of a llama, I would have bought the one of the donkey. Great shot of Mr and Mrs Unomusette, showing Horacewimp , and me, the art of taking selfie's. They must have improved a lot since my visit to Cardiff, because in those times they weren't half as good (to the point that we got laughed at in the street when trying for a selfie).
