Christmas TV isn't always the best and a couple of days ago I found myself looking for something to watch for the evening and switched to the reliable Yesterday channel. A documentary about the sitcom Porridge was advertised, called Porridge: Inside Out. And since I love the show I settled down to watch - and guess who jumped out on me? Only Mr Jeffrey Lynne! I was that shocked I dropped by Christmas variety biscuit into my coffee.
This was the least expected place I could ever imagine to find him. When has anyone ever seen Jeff commenting on a tv programme that wasn't musical? Even then he normally sticks to Roy Orbison documentaries. I didn't even know he was a classic sitcom fan but, of course, he must be! He's that kind of guy.
Jeff's part came up when they were talking in the show about Ian La Frenais, and how he looked like a bass player from some long ago forgotten band from the 70s. Apparently ELO are a long forgotten band from the 70s! -
I love how Ian was another of the eggers-on who tried to persuade Jeff out play again!
Actually, I can just see Jeff as a character from Porridge. 70s Jeff, hair in full glory, he could have been a brother of fellow Brummie Godber. Maybe his character got nicked for pinching guitars and set up his own band in the cell block?

Woah, nice find queenofthehours I hope he doesn't get too excited about this kind of appearance though, I know he must be much more aware of how much people like him but we don't want him turning up on I'm a Celebrity or something... On the other hand I'd pay good money to see him have a go at Strictly *sends more festive biscuits by express post*

Oh no! Not Strictly! I couldn't bear the Lynne legs coming for Balls-style ridicule!
Perhaps I'm a Celebrity is better. All Jeff has to do is sit around in a vest and shorts looking cool in his sunglasses.

Porridge was a great series, and of course Ronnie Barker was just... great. I can well imagine Jeff enjoying it.

Porridge is always worth watching when it's shown - such a wonderful cast of character actors.
Jeff's professional association with Ian La Frenais includes their co-writing of two songs for the soundtrack of the excellent 'reformed-band-on-the-road' film, Still Crazy (1998). They were: Dirty Town by the fictitious band Strange Fruit and A Woman Like That by Bernie Marsden, also co-written by Rosie Vela. I don't believe that he actually plays on either song and they are amongst his least memorable compositions of that era! He did though start working with one of the film's stars, Jimmy Nail as a consequence of the soundtrack involvement.

Is it not true (can't remember where I heard this) that Ian La Frenais lives near JL (as well as Eric Idle!)? What a neighbourhood!
