Bobby Zimmerman is a National treasure, and one of the greatest American poets of all time.

Good on Bob for winning a Nobel Prize for Literature, I have always thought that music especially lyrics in music are a form of literature and poetry and Bob has always been known for his poetical and amusing lyrics. My mom was telling me yesterday that someone said on the news that Bob Dylan changed his name to that after the 'American' poet Dylan Thomas and I know some Welsh people on the forum would be like Dylan Thomas is Welsh! I've seen the Dylan Thomas trail around New Quay in Wales and he's definitely Welsh!

Yay! Our very own Boo Wilbury wins a Nobel prize!!
I've sadly heard, seen and read a few disparaging comments on Bob's achievement. These tend to be by the unenlightened.
I don't think anyone should talk down Dylan's place in literature and his justified Nobel success unless -
A. They know more about the great man's work than just the Judas incident, 'Lay Lady Lay' and a few Byrds covers.
B. They have actually read and heard of the last few year's winners. How the heck can they question Bob's entitlement if they haven't bothered to compare each year's winners? Unless you are a Nobel-follower I don't see how anyone can compare Bob's worth to theirs and if you ARE a Nobel-follower I'm sure you would be broadminded enough to see Bob's value.
Bob truly is a deserving winner. How many great harmonica or guitar melodies can you remember? Not many. How many great lines of words can you remember? Many! Therefore Bob = literature .
And if this won't convince those disbelievers that Bob is a poet, nothing will! -
It's sad George isn't here. I bet he'd be really chuffed for his friend, as I expect Jeff is too.

Bob not going in person? Well, turning up wouldn't be very Bob-like.
I think I read somewhere that George Harrison once stayed at his house and it took two days before Bob actually spoke to him. Even his appearance at the Concert for Bangladesh wasn't a certainty until the very last minute. I've been reading a book about Bob and it seems he either lives in his own world or he lives in ours but does things differently. If people expect something of him he automatically doesn't give it.
There's only one Bob. A man who makes up his own rules.

Bob does what Bob wants. That's why he's Bob.

An interesting little essay on Bob - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b083r9xh (you can download it as an short mp3).
Basically the chap here says that Bob's lack of interest and gratitude is what the Nobel givers secretly wanted. He says that the reason why Bob is so revered for his indifference is because we wish we were Dylan, to feel so at ease with ourselves that we would have the nerve to act that way.
He says people like to be rejected. While people like McCartney are scoffed at for pleasing the public, people like Bob impress us because we can see ourselves in Macca - the need to please and be liked is too close to what we are. While Bob, who is not needy or asking to be liked, is the person we all wish to be.
