To my knowledge, that's the only shot from inside The Rat Club - an outhouse on the grounds of Walsh Hall that Jeff converted into a practice space. I'm fairly sure this group session would have been in late December '81 after the conclusion of the UK leg of the Time Tour, and it's likely the (garden) rehearsal where the other band members first got to hear some of the earliest home demos for what became Secret Messages, this being an opportunity for them to learn the four songs later started on February 9th during the second day of the so-called "flying visit" to Wisseloord Studios. The presence of Brian Jones suggests this was recorded for posterity, since he normally made tapes of everything he was involved with. How I'd love to learn more about this little-documented period...

Wow, ShardEnder! How do you know that? I've never heard of the Rat Club and I thought I knew everything when it came to Jeff and ELO. I must say though, the more time I spend here, the less I think I know. LOL

The first (and only?) mention of The Rat Club that I've been able to find is in Dave Morgan's book, Patterns In The Chaos, where I also learned that the Garden Rehearsals wasn't one session, but a series of group practices held at various locations, including the back garden of his home studio, Grimm Doo, probably because there was no way you could fit the seven-piece Time Tour line-up in his actual recording room. Furthermore, we know that Jeff bought himself a full Oberheim "system" in November '81, with Bluebird the earliest song he wrote using this setup. After that, he produced home demos for Danger Ahead and Hello My Old Friend once described by Richard as being superior to the versions done later at Wisseloord. On top of all this, it's since been revealed that further band rehearsals took place in the land surrounding Wisseloord Studios, with one confirmed track being an early version of Stranger. I've always been fascinated with this period, yet it's equally frustrating to know such material may still exist and is unlikely to ever be heard. Can I please just have an opportunity to spend a day or two in the vaults going through the ELO archive?

But if one photo exists, there must be more. Who only takes one photo? Not a band of ELO's stature.
Equally mysterious is why Jeff will not talk about this period because it shows that ELO was still a band (in Bev's words). And speaking of band photos, how come there are no promo photos of "Jeff Lynne's ELO?"
