Alright, my first thread. I'm mad about this Ordinary Dream alternative orchestral version, which I found some months back on Youtube. You see, the uploader doesn't claim ownership of this edit, and I read on a forum that someone said this was fan-made. I'm not sure about this... it feels very organic, like it was mixed and mastered with the original multi-track. It doesn't sound as the original, Zoom base song with strings placed over it. No, no, this is a real thing we have here. Unless you know something I don't, and here is where I ask for your help. The same channel uploaded Mission (A World Record) in it's official alternative mix, so why wouldn't this be also offical, though never-released? Again, it's very, very organic. It's like ELO's seventies Clark and Tandy's fairy dust over Ordinary Dream. If it was a fan, it was a very gifted one, who manipulates audio like God and knows with insight ELO's characteristical sounds... Echoes, violins, sweet synths... Help me, friends!

Hmm, could be fan-made. The channel seems to be Alyson & the Aly Cats. Their stuff could have a similar sound to the "extras" in the video, and Jennifer plays viola & cello & uses vocoder according to the bio. If you haven't already, check out Feeling Blue (and the latter half of the Star Man video) here: www.reverbnation.com/alyson7

That particular mix has been around for more than ten years(at least that's when I first heard it). I was always under the impression that it was just some fan having a go at remixing the song.

It's garbage because it completely destroy's the flow of the song.

In fact, this channel uploaded more ELO songs, but official mixes: In My Own Time album mix, The Quick and the Draft album mix, Mission (A World Record) (Alternative mix)... And as Chippa said, this mix has been available on the net for at least a decade (I found it as Ordinary Dream (Extended Version)) whereas the video was uploaded five years ago. I think it's assumable that the uploader wasn't involved with the production. Now with zero clues, our quiestion grows bigger. Who produced this? Again, this is not just an attempt of a remix. This is more than just decent. It was done very, very precisely, and thus I'm proposing it being an official "unused" mix. Maybe Jeff and/or Marc Mann wanted Zoom to actually sound like A New World Record/Out of he Blue/Discovery? We know lots of ELO original albums have alternative mixes for their songs, this could be the case too. You know, Alright had a single edit, even though it wasn't a huge difference... This is not a remaster, a compression, nothing like that. This is a bigger edit. It's just more likely that it was created along the original multi-track.

It's garbage because it completely destroy's the flow of the song. Hahahahaha, I respect your opinion. I think of it as a different approach to the song. Anyway, I love the effect strings have over "Didn't matter at the start until I realised it did!". Very Clarkish.

Its a very relaxing, beautiful tune.

jefflynnesongs has the Fan Mix with additional synthesiser strings being from 2001, so if that's accurate, presumably this is not another one again.

I agree about the mix sounding really good and really ELO/Jeff Lynne. If it was a fan who did it, he sure was a good pupil of the Bearded One. And, other than a few arrangements at the beginning, I like it. At some parts the strings really add to it. I would never risk an hypothesis about who did it though.
By the way, what a hell of a song "Ordinary Dream" is. I don't think I could ever get tired of listening to it, no matter if original or alternate version. And the final guitar solo might be Jeff's best ever.

Although these string synths sound pretty good and they are surprisingly well arranged, it is for sure fan-made. This version sounds like a fan of OOTB would want ELO to sound, although JL was clearly in a no-strings period in 2001. These string section sounds even more "busy" and over the top than the strings on OOTB and I don`t think JL aimed for that sound 15 years ago (nor does he now, I guess). I for my part would love a OOTB 2 with over-the-top strings, but I don`t think we will get that, even if there will be a follow-up to ATU.

Here's a version of Ordinary Dream I found probably like 10 years ago on MYSPACE of all places. myspace.com/jefflynneelo/music/songsIt sounds like an acoustic demo but I never knew if it was actually Jeff or not. The other audio clips on the page are for real... When I saw this topic I figured I'd scrounge around and try to find it again. Sounds like Jeff to me... Very pretty. Anyone know what this is?

I'm back! Well, the voice on the acoustic is sooo Jeff's. I would be blown away if it wasn't him. I had heard it some years ago. So sad, we'll never know the exact source of this mix!! Let's hope the one who did it somehow reads this thread, though this is unlikely to happen.

Its Jeff from a radio show back in 2001. I have a copy around somewhere if only I can locate it.
