Well Jeff would certainly approve of that approach Chippa, he must be influencing you from a distance

More new stuff from me. The song that helped to inspire this is "Check Injin" by Grandaddy. I wanted to get a somewhat similar feel, but still have it sound different. I second-guessed myself a lot with this one, but ended up just going for it and doing it anyway. It's called 300 MPH Faster, and you'll see why as the song goes on.

Crazy! The perfect song for when tearing up driving the highway. My intention wasn't to encourage people to break their state traffic laws, but hey.....do what you gotta do.

Hee! I love the castanets. Not sure there's a vehicle on the planet that could keep up with it by the end

Hee! I love the castanets. Not sure there's a vehicle on the planet that could keep up with it by the end The castanets trading little rhythmic fills with the drum is one of my favorite parts of the song. Also, if you listen closely you'll hear me saying "faster" as the song speeds up. I filtered the hell out of it, but it's there!

Here's a song I wrote and recorded. It features my debut performance on bass, as I bought myself one last year. Unfortunately the song came out quite demanding from a vocals point of view, it's not the fast kind of song I might more or less get away with. My singing was too exposed here, I did what I could. Try to imagine it sung by decent singer. And don't mind the lyrics, you might even recognize a couple of lines I stole for the first verse.

By the way, the song is looking for a singer so if anyone is willing to sing it, it's all yours. The only requirement would be to do it in that very same key (if your voice is suited for that), because it would be too much work to record everything again on a different key.

Loving the vibe around this song Helmut. All the instrumentation is smashing , especially the piano and harmonica they sound terrific. The guitar work is lovely too. How did you find playing bass?...most people i know who pick them up immediately try to play it like a guitar and forget the supporting role that it needs to perform (IMHO). The bass on this track sounds great and really suits the style. The lyrics are good and your voice put me in mind of bev singing ben crawley's steele company .. some feat to get down there is it on the lowest part of your register?.... if you don't want to re-record the individual tracks does your DAW software allow you to transpose? ... you could try either each track or mix without vocal and then transpose up ...
All that techie bit to one side though, lovely tune, made me smile

Thanks, dillwyn , BSJ and Buttler , glad you liked it. Loving the vibe around this song Helmut. All the instrumentation is smashing , especially the piano and harmonica they sound terrific. The guitar work is lovely too. Sorry to disappoint you dillwyn but I must be honest, I didn't press a single key on the "keyboard" track (other than the mouse), I just programmed it. Certainly not the way I prefer doing things, I'm more a fan of "organic" music, but at the moment I didn't have a keyboard so I had no option. Recently I bought one but I was too lazy to replace the artificially created track, and besides it was sounding well to me. The drums are Midi, and the rest (harmonica, bass, guitar and of course voice) are organic. Thanks for your words by the way, they mean a lot coming from a quality and experienced songwriter and producer like yourself. How did you find playing bass?...most people i know who pick them up immediately try to play it like a guitar and forget the supporting role that it needs to perform (IMHO). The bass on this track sounds great and really suits the style. Well, even though it's my first bass, it's by no means the first time I have one in my hands. I used to jam a lot with a group of musician friends, sometimes we exchanged instruments and it was a bit the joke to see how each defended himself with an instrument that was not his. There were two guys in particular who loved to put me in charge of the bass (because I sucked), but slowly I started catching the technique a bit, plus they taught me so I had a very basic notion. The first time I caught a bass though was like you say, I tried to play it like a guitar and it was nothing like a guitar. As for the bass function, I've been in enough bands and jams and paid enough attention to it to have an idea of what a bass should normally do (as you say, supporting role). What I did here was, having in mind I'm inexperienced and no virtuoso, take the safe approach and go stuck to the chords, always 1st and 5th, 1st and 5th, adding a 3rd occasionally. It might not be what you'd call a bassline, but you can't go wrong with that, can you? The lyrics are good and your voice put me in mind of bev singing ben crawley's steele company .. some feat to get down there is it on the lowest part of your register?.... if you don't want to re-record the individual tracks does your DAW software allow you to transpose? Haha... in fact I think that -due to not testing the key correctly- the song is even a bit lower than my register. I'm comfortable in 98% of it, but there's a couple of C (I think it's C2) notes on the chorus which I don't reach (what I do is close to a C#). It's a bit annoying because my voice sounds really deep when talking, but then when I sing it's not really that deep and I'm not able to hit very low notes. I never tested my software to find out if it transposes correctly. I always thought the result would be awful. I'm going to give it a try later and let you know.

Nodding away happily pretty much as soon as the song kicked in - if your band regenerates you should have this one on the setlist and the whole crowd will be tapping their feet to it. Your trademark harmonica adds a neat extra layer and it sounds like you've properly come to grips with the bass, nice work Mr Producer!
