It is a tragedy and a reminder of how strong the force of nature can be.
I'm glad you are safe and my thoughts are with you and those who have lost loved ones, their houses and belongings.

Oh, no, Buttler, such a terrible thing to happen, so near to you. Glad you're fine. Stay safe.

Yes, too close for comfort, Buttler. I too am happy you're safe. A tragedy for your country.

No words to describe that type of destruction. There is an article in the last week's New York Times about the statue David and what a precarious state he is in. Timely piece, interesting read. www.nytimes.com/2016/08/21/magazine/davids-ankles-how-imperfections-could-bring-down-the-worlds-most-perfect-statue.html?_r=0"But what would make the David tilt {fall}? The big fear is tremors, tremors of all kinds: traffic rumbling, the nearby construction of a high-speed train tunnel, the steady concussion of tourists’ feet and — most of all — earthquakes. Florence sits near several active fault lines, and every so often the city takes a seismic hit. In December 2014, a rash of 250 earthquakes rattled the countryside around Florence. Most were minor, and none hit the city directly, but still — Florentines could feel the motion".

We've all been totally shocked by the extent of the destruction and loss of life in the earthquake, it's scary enough living as far away as the UK, how much worse for near neighbours? Stay safe and strong Buttler Really interesting article on the statue of David, what a varied history it has and yet after all these years it too is subject to the whims of nature.

This is terrible, Buttler . I saw about it on TV. It's a bit of a lottery, there isn't much you can do about it, not even in terms of prevention. I'm glad you are OK, although it's sad to think about how many people lost everything they had, or even worse, family or friends. How strong did you feel it in Pescara? Did you realize immediately it would be a massive catastrophe or did you think it was just a minor earth tremor? I've been in a strong earthquake once in the Argentine province of Mendoza and I can tell you it isn't nice at all. Pretty scary moments.

I've been in a strong earthquake once in the Argentine province of Mendoza and I can tell you it isn't nice at all. Pretty scary moments. Very strong my friend...I was sleeping when it happened. But I woke up immediately when the bedroom closet started to "Tremble"...it's a bit hard to explain in english language, I'm sorry. I can also say that it's been a "Strange" earthquake. It seems than no dogs predicted it, and a strong wind arrived just before the earthquake... A few videos I found... Only 35 KM from the epicenter... video.corriere.it/terremoto-35-km-amatrice-terra-ha-tremato-cosi/872031c8-6c3c-11e6-b596-7d930840a380From the motorway traffic cameras... video.repubblica.it/dossier/terremoto-24-agosto-2016/terremoto-trema-il-casello-le-riprese-delle-videocamere-in-autostrada/249919/250065

It's interesting you say about dogs Buttler, many years back we had an earth tremor centred some 20 miles away from our home. It was at night, Pip our dog slept in our bedroom and woke us up barking some 10-15secs before we felt the tremor, she definitely knew it was going to happen before us.

We get tremors that are normally from quakes miles away. One that stands out was 30 years ago? Lived top floor in a house, laying on the couch felt the house sway for 5 seconds or more. Oddest feeling.
