I really love Time after Time actually it's one of my favourite tracks off Secret Messages but I think the repetitive singing of time after time can be annoying after a while! I love every song off Time but I find the verse from 21st Century Man that goes you stepped out of the dream believing everything was gone makes me cringe like to me it doesn't fit with the rest of the song. I love Hold On Tight but to me it seems a bit out of place on the album because of the sound and the actual lyrics! It's what's called an interpolation, the insertion of a different portion in the middle of a song. Two other examples of this in ELO songs would be the 2:41-2:45 section in Showdown (the timecodes might be a bit off if you're listening on a CD) and 2:56-3:00 in Evil Woman (timecodes made based on Mastersound CD). I love this sudden change on 21st Century Man, it's one of the progressive things that make Time stand out from other 1980s synthpop albums. It seems to me this sudden change represents the protagonist waking up. Maybe the guitar solo even represents the protagonist's relief knowing it was just a nightmare and that Julie still lives here? Hadn't thought of that to be honest, good point!

I absolutely LOVE "Hold on tight." There was a time about ten years ago when I was so frustrated with my job that I drove to work every day for a couple of weeks crying, with that song cranked up on the CD player and me singing along...very therapeutic. HOWEVER I'm a French teacher, and the mispronunciation of some of the French lyrics in the song always drives the French teacher in me up the wall!!!
Also, as an African American who grew up in the south, when I hear "I wish I was in the Land of Dixie" in "Down Home Town" I see red!! That song ("Dixie") has always been to me a celebration of segregation and the Old South. I know it's all tongue in cheek in the ELO song, and I'm sure there's no racist intent from ELO, but the reaction is visceral for me. (I hope that doesn't count as too political for this forum.)Just saying!

Plenty of folks who live here in the US have no clue what 'Dixie' means either.

So true!
On a lighter note --and I know certain members will disagree vehemently- I find Jeff's singing very annoying on "Midnight Blue" in particular. There's a sing-songy whiny quality to it that makes it anything but romantic to me. He can do so much better!

Uh Ohhhhhhhh.......... eloneen ! Better not let a few members see this post! Some do love this song, but I am not one of them. If you get rid of the lyrics and vocals, the music is worth listening to.

I'm with you both, it's a nice sentiment and quite a pretty tune but the way it's sung and the quite lame lyrics do let it down somewhat. We have to allow our heroes this kind of indulgence though, after all we know they are capable of better creations. Even the mighty Muse have done it on their later albums but I just skip over those songs, sigh and put it down to artistic licence. Edit - any room in the hidey-hole? I think a MB lover may happen along any minute...

Can't believe I thought that the backing singers were singing land of pixies in Down Home Town, glad you cleared that up for me eloneen! I'm sadly one of those people who loves Midnight Blue, it really tugs at my heartstrings!

My own "guilty pleasure" ELO love ballad is "Don't Walk Away." I know that many self-respecting ELO fans will not stoop to liking any Xanadu songs, but this one just tugs at me, so I understand having a special song that just speaks to you in a certain way!! My weakness is the sad ballads like "Telephone Line" and "Big Wheels," as well as "Don't Walk Away." I'm also partial to really fun rockers like "Bouncer" and "Four Little Diamonds," and feel-good uptempo songs like "All Over the World" and "Hold On Tight." wiggle I sing all these songs (and more!) in my car on my daily commute. It makes the traffic less annoying. Of course, I like all kinds of other ELO songs, too. There's something for just about everyone with ELO. By the way, I'm enjoying your story, wolvesgirlgonewild.
