Okay so the idea of this thread is that there are many songs that are just spoiled by one or two things popping up and ruining what would have been a classic. At the moment for me it's 'Bluebird'. The only reason it gets played nowadays is when I'm playing the full 'SM' album, never in my individual playlists. A shame as it's catchy, has a big jangly acoustic guitar and some fantastic harmonies. What grates... the backing vocals 'Work Work'.

Great (Grate, even) idea, I shall go away and consider things before posting

So Fine. The instrumental break just spoiled the song a little for me
And the chorus of Birmingham Blues too.

From Don't Bring Me Down You're looking good just like a snake in the grass. One of these days you're gonna break your glass. Cringe at the second line. It's a clunker, god love him!

What grates... the backing vocals 'Work Work'. Yes! One of these days you're gonna break your glass. I think I've commented in the past, that one seems spot on to me, being snarky towards someone who's always preening in front of their looking glass.

I'm gonna get some shit for this, but if we're talking about non-ELO songs, I'll say the operatic middle bit in "Bohemian Rhapsody" nearly ruins a genuinely great song.

In my opinion there are many ELO songs which are ruined by one small bit, but THE example of this is "Wild West Hero". What does that honky tonk blues have to do in the middle of it? What an aberration, it totally kills the atmosphere the rest of the song had built! What went across Jeff's mind when he thought it would be a good idea? If not for those two mostrosities the song would be in ELO's top 5.

And the chorus of Birmingham Blues too. ^ This! Couldn't agree any more! Really flat, boring chorus that has nothing to do with the energic groove of the verse. This man has good ear.

Instrumental tracks in the middle of albums (eg The whale) grate for me

Instrumental tracks in the middle of albums (eg The whale) grate for me Yep that does it for me too, stops the flow of the album in my opinion! Plus what the hell is Jeff saying/singing? I've even played it backwards, isolated bits using sound forge and still nothing, well apart from I thought I heard 'No one knows how old I am', but I probably imagined that (could have been mumbling his bank details for all I know)

I'm not a huge fan of the "Doo Wop, Dooby Doo Doo Wop" bit in Telephone Line.

I'm not a huge fan of the "Doo Wop, Dooby Doo Doo Wop" bit in Telephone Line. I'm not saying this for the sake of contradicting you, Uno, but for me the "doo wop" part is the very climax of the song, more than the chorus.

Mad, isn't it? We all love Jeff's music but are probably all attracted to totally different bits of it. What grates for one sends another to heaven, this is just one aspect of his genius *nods*
