The choice of amplifier does indeed play a major role in creating that particular sound, but I can't find a quote as to what Jeff used back then. At the very least, I know that Brian May was already using a Vox AC30 by the time he got a few brief guitar lessons from Jeff, though he'd later use the so-called Deacy Amp built for him by Queen bandmate John Deacon in tandem with a signal booster to achieve his own take on the layered "orchestral" effect. While the tools of the trade were just that for many musicians, especially those yet to really make it big, quite a few of us are absolutely fascinated to know how these trademarks were established, and it's a shame we don't have more information. On a somewhat related note, I've been putting in ridiculous amounts of time researching the various keyboards, drum machines and even delay units heard across ELO's three albums released in the '80s, which should help fill in a lot of blanks for anyone looking to emulate this period with a degree of accuracy. I want to say it's a Marshall amp. I know Jeff uses a couple of those now to tour and record, so I could be getting the equipment mixed up. If I run across it again, I'll let you know. Think the current band including Jeff are using Hughes and Kettner amps for guitars, which are just about the best about at the minute. Their tubemeister is just a fabulous sound

Their tubemeister is just a fabulous sound I'm talking about the older amps that sit in front of the cello platform. I don't think those are Hughes and Kettner, but I could be wrong. I downloaded this photo from jefflynneselo.com and blew up the section with the amps.

Those two knackered looking brown things look like Fender or less likely Peavey to me. Here's an interesting article regarding the live set up. Nowt about individual amps though fohonline.com/articles/production-profile/jeff-lynnes-elo/Had a decent search and its Milton who uses the H&K. There's other references to Jeff using Matchless but can't see anything certain. He's definitely not using Marshall though now. They are easily identifiable.

Jeff uses 2 Fender Vibroverbs. Mike Stephens uses 2 Peavey Classic 30s (excellent amps!)

Highly skeptical here too, I'm no expert but I've never seen him completely miss out the N's in "Lynne" like that. At any rate, it's not a blatant forgery like this one...! (Honestly, it doesn't take much research to know that Jeff is probably more adamant than most about spelling his name correctly, after having it botched on Imposters of Life's Magazine... and it takes far less research than that to know how it's correctly spelled!)

Well, I came here to ask why we never see Jeff with his Goldtop(s)* anymore--found my answer on the first page of the thread. Makes sense, I've heard that those guitars are notorious for being heavy, but it's too bad, seeing as how it seemed to be one of his favorite guitars... it's the one I always associate with Jeff (and the reason I dream of someday owning a vintage Goldtop). Anyone know if he at least still uses it in the studio? *I always thought that Jeff only had the one Goldtop, but if you look closely you can see that there were two. One from ELO's early years with a wrap tailpiece, one later with a tuneomatic bridge and stop tailpiece that he used without the pickguard. I think they're both the "'58 Standard" reissue model made in the early '70s; the first one could very well be older but the second one certainly is, though it's rare to find one with the tuneomatic... (ever getting my hands on one of those is wishful thinking, and even if I did, I wouldn't have the heart to swap out the original tuners just so it looks like his... the wrap tailpiece model is slightly easier to come by but still far too pricey for my liking... more likely I'll get a LP Deluxe and throw on some P90's and speed knobs, if I'm ever good enough to justify it...) Some close-up shots... Jeff clearly takes incredible care of his instruments, especially considering that this one was on the road with him all the time...
