His guitar playing is appalling. There's a thread on the Steve Hoffman forum which has managed to isolate some of his playing at the RRHoF. It's just slightly better than beginners standard quite honestly Do you have a link to this? I'm interested in hearing it.

Here is Carl Wayne covering "Momma" or in this case "Mama" "Midnight Blue" and "Stepping Out".
On "Mama", Carl is backed by ELO's Jeff, Mike de Albuquerque, Bev and Richard.
On "Midnight Blue", he's backed by Roy Wood and Louis Clark.
On "Stepping Out", he's backed by Roy Wood.
These songs show what an amazing voice Carl Wayne had.

Its not. The bod who posted it on the Hoffman forum (if youve never been on it, its full of muso anoraks) was posting it as proof of JLs ability.
If you have a listen to the versions of RoB on Youtube ftom the RRHoF tv broadcast you can hear that JLs fluffs the intro.
Its defo his playing

Why do you think it must be bullshit, tightrope ? Do you think someone else recorded this, uploaded it and said it was Jeff Lynne? I'd say it's him. He was never a virtuoso guitarist anyway, not even in his 20s and 30s. And you would only expect his playing would get worse when in his late 60s, when the pulse gets more shaky and you lose strength, speed and coordination for movements like that which require a lot of precision.

First of all, it's not isolated. Yes I think someone is doing a troll job.

Have to disagree I'm afraid. The bloke was arguing that Jeff was an outstanding guitarist and posted it as proof. It's clearly JL. If its someone trolling they are a brilliant guitarist because to get the exact sound, timing, bum notes as JLs performance would be incredible.

First of all, it's not isolated. Yes I think someone is doing a troll job. Who would invest such time and energy into that? It's Jeff Lynne we are talking about, not Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page or Brian May. Not a guitarist that obsessive kids and teens masturbate to, so who would take such work? And while it's not fully isolated, some tracks (voice for example, or piano... the ones which could use similar notes to the guitar) are not there and drums and bass's volumes are lowered down so you can hear the guitar very clearly all the same.

I don't know if it's real or not but how would someone go about getting his isolated guitar? Just curious. Oh, and I just listened to the RRHOF performance. I guess it could be real but what a low thing to do. I mean, he's playing IN A BAND and the whole thing sounds fine so why isolate his playing like that... low blow IMHO

To be honest my lead playing is so shit I could do a canny job of wrecking that intro. But I'd be ok playing the crap rhythm part...i'd be in time at least.
I could make a better effort of the lead on Tuba. Which reminds me.....i used to play in a Brass Band and ever year we'd head to Blackpool for a weekend to play in a national contest. This mainly consisted of seeing which band could actually still get on stage after drinking enough beer to last a year..anyway, I remember me and a band mate on the bus, I was playing the bass parts on the tuba to all sorts of songs whst he was singing. We tried Last Train to London at one point. It was dreadful. The biggest applause and sing along was always for Bon Jovi stuff. It works well on Tuba cos its so shit I guess.
The hotels we used to stay in said they took more money in beer sales when the brass bands were in town than at any other time of the year.
Great times, seems a life time ago.

It's a pity (for me) you are such a perfectionist, jackpunch . I like to record my own stuff and I'd love to have a tuba in one or two songs, same as with euphonium and a good rhythmic guitar, but then you'd probably suffer convulsions when listening to the stuff I record.
