To be sure of getting my review in anywhere near on time I did mostly listen to the first songs from each artist, but some do merit further investigation. I like the whole idea too, it'll be worth looking into how the other artists who went for it came across.
Lianne La Havas - She has a lovely soulful voice and this is a great low-key version of the song, I enjoyed it a lot. I also liked the way they all seemed to be really enjoying themselves, that always improves my impression of any group.
Monsieur Perine - Wow, there's quite a bunch of them, aren't there, or maybe its just a very small room. This has a great vibe, reminds me of Devotchka a bit and you can't help nodding along to it as it warms up your ears. Another winner. Plus I'm impressed at how she managed to match her lipstick so perfectly to her dress, this is important stuff.
The National - Ah, talk about bringing the mood down...this comes across as very earnest and worthy compared to the last two, they all look like they are concentrating very hard and don't have time to enjoy themselves much. There's not so much of the communal enjoyment either. The song comes over as a bit humdrum, maybe as a result. It's probably a lot of people's favourite sort of thing though and it's well played. I did listen to the second song too, in case things improved - it's a better song but still not a lot of happy interaction.
Hozier - Looking forward to this, I love Take Me To Church so it's great to have it up first. I like the way they reproduce that big sound when necessary and although they're doing the concentration thing again the soulful vocal and quality of the song makes up for it. Went for the second song too, another goodie which is sort of folky but with a great guitar sound, liked it a lot.
Macklemore - Even this guy's speaking voice is dead cool, normally rap leaves me cold but the music with this takes it into the right places. And look at them all getting off on it, it's puts a smile on your face just to watch and listen. This is the nicest surprise of the set.
Death Cab for Cutie - I've heard of them but heard nothing by them so far so this should be interesting. I like his voice a lot but I'm distracted by trying to pin down who he sounds like, this is very shallow of me, sorry. Nice atmostpheric song and I like the bass player producing a sound like a cello, this is a useful skill. Had a taster listen of the other two songs, it's nice but all bit samey-sounding. On the other hand, if you do something well, why not stick to it?
An interesting idea for this thread dillwyn, it was good to have a taste of a few different artists in a stripped-down setting which is always a good test of their skills. Thanks for putting it our way
