Has anybody been watching the Euro 96 repeats on ITV? I saw it advertised and got very excited but I've managed to miss all the England matches so far until last night when I saw the England/Holland match. I knew who'd won and by how many goals but it didn't stop the match being exciting to see.
I'm not really into football anymore but from the FA Cup of 1996 to sometime in 1998 I was a huge fan. I diligently filled in my Euro 96 wall chart after every match and even had a Euro 96 t-shirt which is still in my wardrobe. You can't get a better team than the England squad of 1996 - Seaman, both Nevilles, Gazza, Shearer, Sheringham, Redknapp and my favourites Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman.
This virus seems to have only two good things going for it - this wonderful nostalgia trip and Cpt Sir Tom Moore.
I'd forgotten the Holland game was played at Wembley but the vibes were less Wembley or Bust more Live Aid as it was ye olde Twin Towers Wembley (RIP).
Now all I have to do is brace myself again for the dramatic tragedy what was Gareth Southgate's penalty kick.

Not long now before the championship KO horace, I’m feeling nervous for Leeds. I think all our games are going to be shown live. l had hoped to get over for the last home game, sadly ER will be empty. But it’s the right thing to do. MOT

Hopefully LFC can get the 2 wins straight away to FINALLY win the Premier League!

I was in two minds about the season starting again, would it have been better to have got promotion by a points count back method, but of course to play it out will be the best, just hope we don’t bottle it like last year. The team can’t be burnt out after the break so there’s no excuse. Come on Leeds you can do it, MOT.

Wow, queenofthehours, this post surprised me a lot. Who knew you used to be such a big football fan? I also have memories of that Euro '96 and you are right, England had a great team at least in terms of names. I remember the great goal that Gascoigne scored against Scotland, sombrero included. Then Germany got in the way and... same old story. The final was also heartbreaking for the Czech Republic, they had been the surprise of the tournament and after being up 1-0 for a lot of the match, they lost it in that insane modality that was the golden goal (nowadays abandoned, thankfully). And the old Wembley stadium with the two towers was an epic setting for a great tournament full of brilliant players.

I'm not all that bothered now. I'd rather watch cricket but back then football was pretty special to me.
What I didn't anticipate as I watched the old matches was how many of the players from other counties I remembered such as Gary McAllister, Patrik Berger, Jürgen Klinsmann and Dennis Bergkamp. It was incredible to believe also that the games took place at Wembley only 11 years after Live Aid!
If I do watch any football I always have a soft spot for the Czech Republic which goes back to Euro 96.

I had a soft spot for them for almost a decade due to that too. That team was fantastic: Berger, Nedved, Smicer, Skuhravy, Bejbl, Kuka, Kouba...
It's sad to see how they pretty much stopped producing top talent after that generation.

A couple of days ago I started watching "The English game" on Netflix. It's a series about the origins of football, back in the 1870s in England and Scotland. At the beginning of the first episode someone said a phrase I never thought I'd ever listen: "Scotland's passing game is superb, revolutionary, unlike anything we have seen before!". Certainly not applicable nowadays, or even since I can remember for that matter.

I went to see Czech Republic play Portugal in the Euro 96 quarter finals at Villa Park, they won 1-0.

That 2nd goal was a poor one to concede, the defender and goalie both at fault for me.

at the risk of upsetting all the leeds fans on here ... as a Cardiff supporter that was a cracking result... given the challenges we've had (and the lack of money spent) to be just outside the playoffs right now is brilliant.
if we don't make it i want Brentford to go up ... best footballing team in the league IMHO
