Ah a proper musician(different to play by ear chancers like me ) could be a dropping blip, tape splice error, although that would be an odd place to listening where we are in the song. He could have thought it was the chorus ...with no guide vocal, a counting error would be possible...he does hit the crash an unusual number( 6?) times from 2:41...that is going to bug me. Of course it could be the boss playing with us and keeping it interesting. I am slowly coming around the the Kate bush school of no cymbals as they splash high frequencies over everything Yep thats it. Sounds like cymbals on beat 2 instead of a snare...... Sorry, its def 2.32 not 2.40 ! Perhaps this single drum issue is the reason most of the hits were re-recorded ?

While there definitely is a tape splice at the start of that particular section, I think the "mistake" everyone is hearing was simply an artistic decision on Bev's part, though I can see why it would bother a lot of listeners - by this point, Jeff was already well on the way to making the drum parts almost metronomic (to make double tracking easier, which he later avoided by simply using drum machines), so anything that breaks such consistency must have been annoying to him.
As for the production approach of avoiding cymbal crashes where possible, I've been told that Jeff really got into that particular school of thought for a while, preferring to have treble-heavy layered acoustic guitars keeping the rhythm as opposed to a hi-hat or ride. On some of the '80s material, he'd even go as far as to overdub cymbals on after everything else so he could control their position in the mix, though he's returned to tracking a full kit live more recently.

Sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree. There is no way that its an artistic decision. Every other bar in every chorus uses the same pattern, it makes no sense for a drummer to change one bar, so slightly in such a random place.

ok so I listened and listened and listened and the only "odd" thing I can hear is the extra cymbal hit, but you have to remember the drums were done first and then maybe overdubbed a couple of times (no lead vocals or lead bass synth) so hitting a cymbal instead of a snare was obviously missed in the mix...(and missed by nearly everyone else on the planet )

Do you mean the moment when BB seems a bit disorientated and changes from the ride cymbal to hi-hat and back to ride again?

Sorry , I just checked the first page and missed the other ones. You obviously mean the strange hi-hat moment. That`s definitely a little mistake but they probably thought that no one would hear it :-)
