Risky choice this time. I might get bananas and tomatoes thrown at me.
In just a few words, "Nashville" is a TV series about the lives of several fictitious country musicians which take place in that city. It has been aired since 2012 by ABC channel and is now on it's 4th season. If you want more info, here's the Wikipedia link.
As you can imagine, the series is full of music, mostly songs which have been written by relatively unknown artists and which have been gathered by the series' producers to feature as if they had been written by their characters. There are also a few covers of well-known songs. On some episodes, famous country singers participate as themselves (like for example Vince Gill and Kelly Clarkson).
After each season, a couple of CDs with all the songs featuring in the series are released. The songs on them are sung by the actors who play them in the series. Obviously it's mostly country music, but there isn't so much old-school country. Instead, there's quite a lot of modern-sounding country and I'd even say some of the songs wouldn't even qualify for country but for pop.
I didn't choose one particular CD of one season but instead made a mix of those which I consider are the best songs:
01 - Ball and Chain (ft. Connie Britton and Will Chase): nice duet, nothing extraordinary but very commercial song and probably the song you hear most along the series.
02 - The blues have blown away (ft. Connie Britton, Lennon Stella and Maisy Stella): for some reason the young Stella sisters always get the best songs in this series. This one is a beautiful melody with a very simple chord structure.
03 - Boys and Buses (ft. Hayden Panettiere): this is an example of one of those songs I would never qualify as country, but then again, the character who sings it supposed to be in that branch of the genre called "bubble-gum country" which aparently is like more plastic or related to pop. The song itself is very good in my opinion, it has a lot of energy and the verse reminds me a good lot to ELO's "Sweet is the night" verse.
04 - Looking for a place to shine (ft. Clare Bowen): Australian actress Clare Bowen does a great job on the vocals on this pleasant little tune. I like the banjos in the background.
05 - Be my girl (ft. Sam Palladio and Jonathan Jackson): this song is very uplifting. The verse is great in my opinion and the best the song has to offer. The vocal harmonies are fantastic.
06 - Have a little faith in me (ft. Maisy Stella and Will Chase): this is a well known song written by John Hiatt in 1987 and covered by many famous artists. In this cover, 10-year-old Maisy Stella commits herself to an almost obscene display of superb vocal abilities that humiliate all of us who at some point in our lives tried to sing anything decently, even in the shower. The song may be a bit boring at first but at the end it gains a lot of energy and feeling.
07 - He ain't gonna change (ft. Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere): this song is amazing in my opinion, one of my favourites from the show. In the right hands a song like this could have been a massive world-wide hit, maybe in the '80s. It's just 3 chords, it's all in the melody.
08 - Anywhere from here (ft. Lennon Stella, Maisy Stella and Dana Wheeler): the best song out of the 3210381 songs on the show, and again it's the Stellas sisters who get it (are they the director's nephews or something?). This is a country music little masterpiece IMO. It's a pity that it will surely remain obscure for eternity because it's so freaking good...
09 - World on time (ft. Sam Palladio, Clare Bowen and Jonathan Jackson): I have a soft spot for this kind of fast-paced country songs. The melody is seriously good and the chorus would work great for a singalong. The 3 voices blend really well.
10 - Shotgun (ft. Christina Aguilera and Buddy Miller): Christina Aguilera features on the series during a few episodes as pop singer Jade St. John, who was secretly a country music fan. She gets to sing this beautiful ballad -great chorus!- in which she does a neat job (who knew she could sing so well without screaming?).
