You gotta love Electric Light Orchestra/No Answer, but I think Message from The Country should have been ELO's first album. It's so different from everything else that The Move produced and have a few really great songs.
It's not a perfect album, there are some throwaway tunes there, but stuff like the title track and No Time are among Jeff's finest.
In fact if it had been the first album I think it would have made ELO 1 look quite lame as a follow up
That's true. Not to knock the wonderful ELO1 but it isn't the most...er...(trying to think of the right word but can't!)...popular(?) sound to begin a band career with. I like to think of Message From the Country as the equivalent of ELO's Time - the majestic album classic the band was born to create.
Message from the Country ended the Move with a bang.
To me there's no "should have" about it - Message From The Country really is the first ELO album in all but its name! In terms of personnel and the period they were recorded, its tracks could almost be regarded as ELO outtakes. However, I can appreciate why Jeff and Roy made the decision to split the sessions over two very distinct releases. My understanding is that anything containing strings was held back for ELO, while songs featuring woodwind or brass instruments went out as The Move to help differentiate between the two projects, even though one was a continuation of the other.

Horacewimp: We are all good thanks, just wishing I could go on a foreign holiday, it’s just not worth the risk with Covid and the possibility of a 14 day quarantine, we may do some short breaks in the U.K.
