Well, first of all you win the prize for being the only reviewer brave enough to venture into the wilds of further listening, nice one Helmut83! I think it's the vocal that's very Zeppelin-esque with Wolfmother, I don't remember Zep having such a bludgeoning sound. Same with White Unicorn in a way, the song itself is maybe a bit Musey but it's much heavier than they usually go for. I was secretly hoping the Rocky Burnette clip would be your sort of thing, and I was right! It is very silly but I think he knew exactly what he was doing, which just makes it all the more fun. Must confess I have no idea what language Devotchka are singing in, was kind of thinking it might sound familiar to you but it seems it's from more than one country, how curious. Oh, and having listened to lots more of Cosmo Jarvis's songs I'd definitely say he has an eye for the ladies. But mostly he sings about being rejected by them, heh! If you do get time to listen to Love is only a feeling by The Darkness you might like it if you're into an over-the-top power ballad with a dizzying video Anyway, thanks again for all your comments, I really enjoyed reading the detail you went into and I'm chuffed you mostly had a good time listening

Well, first of all you win the prize for being the only reviewer brave enough to venture into the wilds of further listening, nice one Helmut83! Well, thanks. I found a good while to sit down relaxed with the only purpose of listening to new music, and I relly felt in the mood to do so. Sometimes it's hard to find a good gap to do it, but when you are able to you are reminded about how pleasant it can be. Oh, and having listened to lots more of Cosmo Jarvis's songs I'd definitely say he has an eye for the ladies. But mostly he sings about being rejected by them, heh! Well, that's an interesting subject to write about. Being an expert on the matter myself, maybe I should do like Mr. Jarvis and try writing something about that as well. I was secretly hoping the Rocky Burnette clip would be your sort of thing, and I was right! It is very silly but I think he knew exactly what he was doing, which just makes it all the more fun. Yeah, that was one of the standouts of the set, if not the standout. The director of that video is a genius and sure knows how to make things go weird and funny at the same time. If you do get time to listen to Love is only a feeling by The Darkness you might like it if you're into an over-the-top power ballad with a dizzying video I just listened to it, good ballad, sounds very '80s, reminds me of stuff Whitesnake could have made, very energetic, probably a bit too overloaded with the sounds of distorted guitars but still a good song. It just kills me that I couldn't know where the clip was filmed, because there's a discussion in the comments, some say it was shot at Venezuela and others at the Blue Mountains in Australia and I don't know which one is right.

1. Wolfmother - Dimension – I don’t think I know Wolfmother and was worried when this started that they would turn out to be another of those “retro” bands that take on the sound and look of a classic rock band and end up failing miserably at emulating both the look and the sound. I was pleasantly surprised to hear this was not the case. This track is a great one and I especially love the guitar even if I can't hear the words.
2. Lulu - To Sir With Love – I’ve never been much of a Lulu fan, even less so after her appearance with Take That. She was considered very old then so I don’t know how old she is now! Anyway, I like this song and the film it comes from which features the reliable Sidney Poitier and a young Eric Pollard from Emmerdale as one of the school kids. The movie is very 60s and I like that, even Lulu is great in it.
3. Rocky Burnette - Tired of Towin' the Line – I don’t think I know any Rocky Burnette songs but I do think I know this, at least I know the tune – maybe somebody made a song similar, I don’t know. Hang on – it reminds me quite a bit of this by a spin-off band we love and sung by someone else we love.
4. Devotchka - The Enemy Guns – I didn’t think I’d enjoy this but I do. I know the band name but I don’t think I’ve heard their music before. I didn’t think it would be for me but I like this – I love the whistle-y bits best. The drums are great, everything is a bit different on this track. I like that.
5. Arctic Monkeys - Mardy Bum – I’m a bit of a Monkey’s fan, they’re a good old fashioned indie band plus I always feel I should support local bands. “Mardy” is a term we use all the time in our house. The Monkeys sometimes remind me of the Smiths – especially in their use of non-usual pop lyrics and even sometimes in the vocals.
6. Darts - Can't Get Enough of Your Love – When I saw these on Top of the Pops a few weeks ago on BBC4 I wasn’t very impressed but I have been listening to this song many times over the last few years – entirely because of its ELO connections which I was ignorant of until recently, I just felt drawn to the track – now I know why!
7. System of a Down - Radio Video – Not too sure about this. This is the kind of music I dislike very much but as the rest of the selection here are fantastic I can enjoy this easier.
8. Sergio Mendes - Mas Que Nada – This brings some summery Brazilian vibes to winter, where’s my cocktail?
9. Furniture - Brilliant Mind – Wonderful song, I love this, I’ve known it forever yet never remember the name of the band. A bit of an 80s classic.
10. Mike Oldfield - Man in the Rain – I adore Mike Oldfield. I’d put him in the Jeff Lynne/genius category: a multi-instrumentalist of such gifted brilliance that the world has chosen to look to other talentless music as their sun shines too bright for lesser eyes and ears. Mike is such a terrific guitarist too and, like Jeff, knows when to be tasteful and knows just what a track needs to make it special. I hadn’t heard this track before and it proves that Mike can’t fail to create great music.
11. Cosmo Jarvis - Gay Pirates – Anything that starts with a mandolin can’t be bad. And, anyway, this track gets full marks from me for sounding a lot like Procol Harum’s ‘Souvenir of London’.
12. Sniff 'n The Tears - Driver's Seat – Like the Furniture track, this is another forgotten classic. I love this track and only found out it had a name and a band behind it just before Christmas.
13. The Darkness - Christmas Time (Don't let the Bells End) – Where are they now? I don’t remember hearing anything from them after this track came out. I’m not a great fan but hearing it once a year at Christmas is enough.
I really enjoyed hearing all these songs, especially as they all sounded so different. It's been nice to have a compilation for a change. I've learnt a lot too. I've learnt facts, band names and song titles and learnt the less a song sounds like the ones before and after it the more you notice it.

Very well spotted about the spin-off band, Queen. I hadn't noticed that similarity until you mentioned it.

Thanks for the great review queenofthehours! I might have guessed you'd be a Monkeys fan, they were a real breath of fresh air when they came out but for me they've gone a bit mainstream these days. Golly, you're right about that sound-alike track, I have the first album but never got around to buying the second And I discovered that Mike de Albuquerque sang with them so this thread is expanding my knowledge too. I had to look up how old Lulu is once you piqued my interest, she's 68. Haven't heard her singing lately though. Must admit I quite liked her guest slot with Take That. I went to see The Darkness just before Christmas, they're still around and put on a right good show. They were off the scene for a few years due to the usual musical differences and drugs disasters but all's sorted now. Considering the range of songs on offer I'm impressed you were only really doubtful about System of a Down, putting them in was a bit of a gamble on this forum and I was surprised how many people did actually like them. The fact that you liked the rest of the songs just proves once again what brilliant musical taste you have, I salute you most solemnly
