I confess to not hearing this song in eons.
Tonight I gave it a listen and IT EFFIN BLEW ME AWAAAAAAY. The lyrics are wonderful....and sad. The long instrumental passages in the middle and the end are not noodling in anyway whatsoever. Jeff sings it from his heart.
This is a really REALLY superb epic song, isn't it?

It's so good. Was one of my faves as a kid. Need to hear it again soon. It's been a while.

An absolute classic and a great riposte to anyone who thinks ELO were/are all about three minute 'pop' singles.
I love the bit after the violin solo when it's all gone quiet and then suddenly at around 8:28, the vocals come back in just a little too loud (deliberately so). Now that is progressive rock!

it's the sort of track you can hear a thousand times and still hear something different, somewhere there's an early take/edited version

Hands down my favourite track from the first 3 albums. I know it'll never happen but it'd be a dream come true if Jeff broke this one out next year.

The best track from the 2nd album by far in my opinion.

Jeff recently went on record as saying he can't listen to any of those songs now. So I wouldn't hang your hat on a concert outing.
Having said that Roll Over Beethoven is still the showstopper - but then that's a different story.

It was a radio interview. I think it may have been either BBC Radio Scotland or Planet Rock.

I adore Kuiama, it's my favourite ELO song and my first born has it as her middle name (edged out by Alice as her father is a rabid Alice Cooper fan, and to be fair it's a lot easier to spell) I love the way it's unashamedly long, so that the totally epic instrumental break can go on and on and on...that violin solo still leaves me in a puddle. And I agree with soonerorlater about the jump-out-of-your-skin vocal return, not to mention the moody, atmospheric build up to it. You can just imagine staring out at a ruined battlefield after the mayhem has moved on. Shame Jeff isn't keen on reviving it, but it's not really his sort of song these days, you can't blame him. Just creating it in the first place is good enough for me

It is one of my favourite songs from the first three albums, don't play it too often but when it comes on the iPod during shuffle it gets turned up loud.

Really? Wow, I didn't know! If you ever commented this before I think I missed it. Talk about being a real fan... Does she like ELO as much as you do?

I have to say Kuiama is my favourite off the second album. I don't play it often put always feel immersed in it whenever I do.

A stunning song. Especially the "I wanted to run........father land" bit has always sent shivers down my spine. In terms of chords and how the melody goes with the chord changes, I assume that Jeff had been listening to And Your Bird Can Sing by The Beatles lately. I don't get why Jeff should say that he can't listen to those songs anymore. He has said himself that on Out Of The Blue he overproduced and seemed to think that "more is more". I agree. There are background vocals and stuff all over the place and sometimes it's exhausting. That doesn't make the album bad, but my point is that if the early albums contain elements that are not satisfactory, so do some of the hit albums that came later. Personally I think that Jeff's embarrassed because he thinks he was doing what was expected at the time, which was complicated rock/pop. I think this (what he thinks was his motivation at the time) clouds his judgement of the actual music to some extent.
