Not 100% sure of the etiquette on this board but hoping it's okay for me to start a new thread. We've had about a week to digest Alone in the Universe. Really interested in hearing which song die-hard ELO fans consider to be the best off the new album.
The one song that's really grown on me is Leaving You. However, would have to say All My Life is my absolute favorite. If you had to pick just one, which would it be?

One Step at a Time is brilliant, and the most ELO-sounding thing on the album, IMO. However, I feel like I'm in the minority when I say how much I love Ain't It a Drag. It might sound much more Wilbury than it does ELO, but it's one of the best Wilbury songs that the Traveling Wilburys never made. I'm thinking of covering it. The harmonies are just brilliant.

I was going to say the same, "Ain't it a drag" is for me the best song of the album. In terms of upbeat songs, I haven't heard something so good and fresh-sounding from Jeff since "Lift me up". The other one which I think deserves an honorable mention is "Dirty to the bone". A whole different kind of song, with some melancholic vibe to it (and a great chorus), but excellent as well. Maybe in a month or so these two may switch positions in my ranking, but they are definitely #1 and #2. They stand up clearly among the rest IMO.

All My Life.
The whole thing is stunning, but the pre-chorus is absolutely magical. Some of the best harmony he's ever come up with, IMO.

Aint it a Drag is the best live song from on the album, When I Was a Boy the most heart string pulling, All My Life the most beautiful, I'm Leaving You the best throwback, One Step at a Time the most 70's ELO and Alone in the Universe takes me away from the stresses of the day. When the Night Comes is a real attention grabber and punchiest on the album and as far as the bonus tracks go Blue is excellent and sounds like it should be in a movie. For me though, Love and Rain is the best performed song on the record. Jeff needs to get Laura in the studio more often! The Sun Will Shine on You is special because it was written for someone who was going through a tough period in their life and Jeff wanted to make them feel better and it is excellent. I'm rambling I know but this album is close to perfect and I can't stop listening to it. God bless Jeff Lynne!

Alone In The Universe. A lot of Jeff's songs contain moments that send shivers don't my spine. So far I haven't felt that often when I've listened to the new album. But "That's how it feels now you are gone" is such a moment. So simple, but absolutely stunning. The "that's how it feels" (F major to F minor and the melody ascends a whole step - to the 6th I think) bit really gets to me. There's nothing unique happening there. I think it's the chord and melody movement and Jeff's voice combined. So, in a nutshell, there are many nice moments on the album, but that's one of the rare "oh Jeff, you did it again" moments for me so far.
Oh, and The Sun Will Shine On You is amazing too. Incidentally, the verse in All My Life reminds me of the chorus in You Never Cry Like A Lover by the Eagles. And the chorus is so close to the Ordinary Dream chorus that I've yet to "get it" as a different song. Dirty To The Bone is still Moment In Paradise with different lyrics, and I still feel that MIP is a far superior song - a tough one to beat.

there are lots of nods to past elo material all over this album....lots of it, to me, sound like elo should sound now....bit of the past/bit of the present....so its a great album and after a week of solid listening still see it as snuggly sitting in with all the 'classic' elo albums of the past....everyone moves on and Jeff has done that, brilliantly....i have no complaints and neither should anyone else, new material, Jeff out in public and a Tour...who would have thought that would happen a few years ago....
so....its a tough question....it would have to be one from....All My Life, Alone In The Universe, When I Was A Boy or The Sun Will Shine On You...but thats not to say the other tracks arent great....Dirty To The Bone and Aint It A Drag are fabulous....and in fact as a supposed bonus track Fault Line is good as well and I find it quite a cheery pick up after AITU....and the more I listen to Blue the more i like it....
Maybe its me...but it just sounds like Jeff has put a lot of emotional commitment in to this...so maybe im picking the more emotional tracks...interesting to see where im at with this album in a few weeks...
I will pick All My Life..and i didnt think i would be able to choose any track over When I Was A Boy....but i could easily have picked one of the others....

I'm torn between "Ain't It A Drag", "Love and Rain"(love the guitar solo, and the crazy sugary pop section, towards the end), and "All My Life".

Most of the songs are winners for me but One Step at a Time sounds the most joyful and uplifting despite the lyrical content. It's also insanely catchy, love it

One Step, followed very closely by AITU. Strange perhaps, but WIWAB is my least fav....but I like it.
