I would love to hear Horace Wimp,Xanadu,I'm Alive,Don't Walk Away,Secret Messages and Four Little Diamonds played live just so Jeff can say that every single has been played live at some point. Secret Messages was played once - during the soundcheck for the Zoom Tour DVD recording in 2001, I seem to recall - and can be found on the ELO Live album, though you're definitely right about the others in that list. Saying that, what about Across The Border, Stranger, Getting To The Point and So Serious? All of these were singles (well, the first was technically the lead song on a cancelled EP meant to coincide with the release of the Four Light Years boxed set), yet the last was only ever "performed" on a few television appearances, where the band lip-synced to the studio version. Also, what about Surrender and Latitude 88 North? Yeah your right about most of the additional songs but so serious has been done(and filmed too,Disneyland I think off the top of my head....)

So Serious was indeed performed "live" a few times during 1986, but every televised appearance of this song was lip-synced to the studio version, including the band's appearance on Disneyland's Summer Vacation. I've read that it was common for groups featuring at Montreux to mime, so ELO didn't particularly stand out there (and yet, Queen were absolutely slated for doing the same when they also played the same festival, despite their reputation not taking much damage in the past because of this by contrast). Curiously, for a series of shows intended to promote Balance Of Power, just one song was rehearsed by the on-stage musicians to Jeff's satisfaction, this being Calling America. If you compare the live version to its album counterpart, there are quite a few notable differences, with the song proving rare opportunity for Dave Morgan to showcase his vocoder, which most prominently featured on the bridges. Also, you can tell this when this was actually being performed because of Jeff not even attempting the high note during the chorus, plus there's an additional two bars of build-up just before the final section that ends rather than fading out - I suspect this could be a leftover from one of the extended mixes that is known to exist.
Speaking of rehearsals, the initial practice sessions for Heart Beat '86 took place earlier in the year at Jasper Carrott's Solihull-based club, The Boggery, where they'd previously started preparing for the Time Tour in August 1981. When ELO was then booked onto a short tour supporting Rod Stewart, they went back to fine tune a few details at the Nomis complex in London. This was where Lou Clark took delivery of a new synthesiser that proved so good at replicating string sounds Jeff allowed him to spend two hours while the others worked on the rest of their set to program the opening section of Roll Over Beethoven into its built-in sequencer, meaning they could possibly abandon the tape that normally opened this song. Upon hitting the button for the first time, the rest of the group laughed as Lou then mockingly pretended to play the opening bars of the Beethoven's 5th Symphony, with the change from pre-recording to pre-sequenced intro happening in time for the final concerts in Germany, though it very nearly didn't work out on the first attempt... Based on recollections from Dave Morgan, it seems as if Lou couldn't actually find the trigger in the dark between songs, causing Jeff to becoming increasingly frustrated. In the end, one of the road crew had to come on stage with a torch so they could continue, with the other members only learning what happened after the show, causing them to fall around laughing and ensure that a spotlight became a permanent fixture on his keyboard!

ShardEnder, there are no really great books on ELO's recording/output history. Are you in? Your avatar - is that Secret Messages alternate cover?

ShardEnder, there are no really great books on ELO's recording/output history. Are you in? Your avatar - is that Secret Messages alternate cover? After quite a few people suggested I put all my knowledge and passion to good use, I've been working on a book primarily about the Secret Messages album for a few months now, though it will also include some background on ELO's two other studio projects from the 1980s. I can't promise this will end up being the final title, but at the moment it's called A Message From Another Time: ELO 1981-1986 (as I feel this era is so poorly represented, with even Jeff himself not giving it much attention). Also, my avatar is indeed the originally intended cover for the double LP set, or at least a recreation of this based on the rare promotional poster, which actually features the same band logo watch you could buy on the Time Tour! For the record, my book's cover will be based on this as well, and I hope to have the end result out early next year at the latest...

Fantastic. Yeah...Time/Secret Messages is tops for me. When SM came out I couldn't figure out where Beatles Forever was....I had read about it in a band interview before the release. Years later I found out about the intended double, and I listened to all the excluded tracks.....and I fuckin cried, haha. If ever a record company needed to be thrown into jail this was the crime. The SM that we got was only an appetizer for what it could have been. (And Rock And Roll Is King never should have been the single.)

I hate to derail this thread, but does anyone have a copy of that interview from before the release of Secret Messages? I've only ever seen a lone quote from it, primarily being the one about Kelly describing Beatles Forever as the planned lead single from the intended double album, which was originally scheduled for a December 1982 release and still entitled Unexpected Moments.

I forget which mag I read it in, but I was in a special location so it was early summer 1983. Kelly was talking about how big Beatles Forever was going to be. And in this mag it was called Secret Messages. Nobody mentioned "double album" though. I certainly had an Unexpected Moment when fuckin Beatles Forever was NOT there just a few weeks later, haha.

If there was to be 25 songs in a show, I would hope to see 15 Greatest Hits, 5 off the new album, and 5 surprises. In my dreamworld the 5 surprises would be: Fire On High (Imagine opening with this motherf****r!!) Hello My Old Friend (I said it was my dreamworld, ok?) Endless Lies (This would kick ass live, towards the end of the show. "This one is for you, Roy.") Poorboy (The Greenwood) (It sure sounds like one of the Greatest Hits.) Something from The Idle Race era. ("This is from the sixties. It wasn't even called ELO then but nevermind.") Yeah, there are so many ELO hits, I don't want to bother selecting which ones I'd want to hear most. As for 5 surprises? - Here Is The News
- Moment In Paradise (do you think he'll play any song from Zoom?)
- Shangri-La
- Steppin' Out
- Bluebird
As a side note: I really want to hear Twilight live. It's my favorite ELO song, and it kind of walks the line between "hit" and "forgotten album track," so it's hard to say if he'd play it.

I feel like Moment in Paradise and State of Mind have the greatest shot at being played. Or possibly even Long Black Road, since American Hustle brought that song into the spotlight for a while.
Then again, wasn't Moment in Paradise written for Rosie Vela?

I heard him say that "Moment in Paradise" is probably written for Vela. Probably? He has said that is, though.

Mmmm...don't forget the most important thing: he's nearly 70, so I wouldn't expect a long setlist Another important thing to remember is that this is a TOUR and not a single live show as the Hyde Park To sum up: 16/17 songs, not more 18 songs played live yesterday. Told ya thewordsofaaron
