Don't forget that this was recorded when he had a cold. Ah, OK then, that covers it.

I haven't watched the Variety Show in years due to the fashion for booking here-today-gone-tomorrow pop singers, unworthy people to compere, and thinly veiled "adverts" for the latest West-End shows. But I made the exception for Jeff's sake this year and was very glad I did.
He stole the show for me. Reg was obviously the headliner but Jeff we could say was the "second top" act. Coming as he did at around the halfway point, around inverval time, and because he also got to play two tracks. Second top is definitely better than headliner here - a lot of people would have gone to bed before Reg came on at 10pm-ish!
One thing that I wasn't keen on was how blatantly the show was used for selling. Reg singing his latest single and an oldie that just happened to have been featured recently in a TV ad, an ad for Reg during the break too. All those show snippets of shows that just happen to be on at the moment in a theatre. Jeff's new single and 'Mr Blue Sky' (famous for being featured in an M&S ad) and an ad on TV immediately afterwards (Ok, I forgive only Jeff, he needs the exposure). The very worst was an ad for poor old Cilla's CD straight after Tarby's tribute - that really was taking commercialism to a sad level.
Why can't we just have an entertainment show for entertainment's sake?

Is it Ray Cooper who's Reg's percussionist? I don't think I have ever seen someone make so much fuss over banging a tambourine! !He looked like he was having a seizure of some sort. Does it make a different sound if you whirl your arms around before whacking it?

Does it make a different sound if you whirl your arms around before whacking it? Yes! It was Ray. If you think that was elaborate you should see him going at it at the Concert for George (featuring Mr Lynne). My mother dislikes Reg and when she was sat watching Reg and Ray's performance, knowing Ray's skill and status in the rock world, said very sharply "Why can't Jeff have him in his band?" Why indeed.
Maybe Ray is the Bez of Reg's band?
I'm fairly sure you CAN hear the whirly bits on the albums he plays on. It gives off "vibes" into the air .
