I took this photo from Jorge Devicenzi's collection. imageshack.com/i/eyO6Ce0DjOn the left there's a photo of the Argentina football national team that were world champions in 1978. On the right, there's Jeff Lynne with Olivia Newton John, probably in 1980, wearing a t-shirt or jersey with white and light blue stripes. An interesting -and probably revealing- fact is that during 1978 and 1979 Argentine left back Alberto Tarantini (who is featured in the upper row 4th from left to right) played at Birmingham City Football Club, of which Jeff is a devoted fan (in fact, "Birmingham Blues" was called so after his favourite team's nickname). Tarantini is known to be a music fan, a musician himself (he plays music professionally nowadays) and an ELO fan, and apparently he knew Jeff Lynne back then. In an interview, Trevor Francis, another player, claims to have spent New Year's Eve at Jeff's along with Tarantini and that, at the Argentine's request, they played "Telephone Line" and sang all together. Later on Jeff himself talks about a farewell party for Alberto in which he took part and jokes about "Discovery" doing great in Argentina thanks to him. theelonetwork.weebly.com/jeff-lynne-interview---daily-express-1976.htmlSo the question is: would the jersey Jeff is wearing be the one from Argentina's national team? If so, would it have been gifted to him by Tarantini?

It certainly looks like an Argentina shirt and timing wise would fit in with the recording of Xanadu, so it is likely I think it is a shirt given to Jeff by Tarantini.

I'm surprised that Jeff has never invested in a soccer(football) team. He seems to be a superfan, of sorts.

Does he not hold a stake in "the blues" with mate Jasper Carrott?
