For this weeks CD I’ve chosen Ultravox, in particular the Midge Ure years, rather than one particular album I’ve gone for a “Best Of”.
First some background details on the band, from 1974 until 1979, singer John Foxx was front man and the main driving force behind the band. Foxx left the band to embark on a solo career and, following his departure, with the three remaining members in hiatus Midge Ure took over as lead singer. This is where we pick up the story.
Should you want to hear how the band originally sounded then I would recommend Quiet Men, Hiroshima Mon Amour or Rockwrok are listened too.
Midge Ure enjoyed particular success in the 1970s and 1980s in bands including Slik, Thin Lizzy, Rich Kids, and Visage.
Ure revitalised the band and steered it to commercial success lasting until the mid-1980s, he co-wrote and produced the charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?", which has sold 3.7 million copies in the UK. The song is the second highest selling single in UK chart history.
I suggest the first twelve sounds are listened to on this link, however if you are up to it please review all 22!!
If you get bored then jump to tracks 19 and 21 which were released by Midge Ure as a solo artist and are worth a listen.
1) Sleepwalk
2) Passing Strangers
3) Vienna
4) All Stood Still
5) The Thin Wall
6) The Voice
7) Reap The Wild Wind
8) Hymn
9) Visions In Blue
10) We Came To Dance
11) One Small Day
12) Dancing With Tears In My Eyes Extra
tracks not necessary for review:
13) Lament
14) White China
15) Loves Great Adventure
16) Same Old Story
17) All Fall Down
18) All In One Day
Midge Ure Solo tracks not necessary for review:
