I don't know if this has been touched upon before but was Richard ever touted for ELO pt2 and if he was and he declined,is this why Jeff still prefers to work with him given the troubles that Jeff had with Bev and Kelly? Ever since BOP and the 'demise' of ELO, Jeff has not worked with any former ELO members apart from Richard so is this a reward as such for Richard not co-operating with pt2?

Interesting question. Just the other day, I happened to rummage around among my CD box sets and came across ELO's Flashback.
In the booklet, Jeff says the following about his time in ELO: "You tend to try and forget the painful bits. I suppose it was kind of lonely, except Richard Tandy was always with me, helping me."
So, I think Jeff and Richard has a bond that goes back decades. I guess, for Richard it was never possible to join something called ELO without Jeff.

I don't recall Richard ever commenting openly on Part II or The Orchestra, but I'd be very surprised if he wasn't invited to join the group back in 1988 when Bev first proposed reuniting ELO to Jeff, who declined yet gave his permission for the band to continue under a slightly different name (which he couldn't do much about, since Bevan technically owned a 50% share until 2000).
However, it's telling that in addition to Part II's sound suffering as a result of Richard being absent, he was the only member who continued to work with Jeff. Actually, even that's not entirely true, as Dave Morgan also appeared on Armchair Theatre, not to mention Lynne produced the song God's Good Time for him. Maybe there's something to this post-split loyalty theory?

Maybe there's hope for Mel Gale......... Possibly... made me realize, I have no idea what he does nowadays? Or Hugh McDowell? Are they still in music?

Jeff and Richard go way, way back. Richard was working with the Move even before Jeff joined and was well known (as was Jeff) on the Birmingham scene. Perhaps their strong bond has less to do with ELO and more to do with being pals OUTSIDE of work?
Bev and the other ELO chaps including Roy have all been official "workmates" in either The Move or ELO yet RT was never in the official initial ELO line-up nor officially a member of the Move - perhaps, since he held no position, no power, he and Jeff were on much easier terms.
I doubt Richard ever considered being in ELO2 since he was busy enough with Dave Morgan - the relationship between DM and RT is easily as strong and fruitful as that with JL.
What Jeff and Richard have is a great mutual respect for each other, each knows the other's strengths and weaknesses. I wonder if Richard only plays as a favour to Jeff? It's surely trust which binds them together, something which is in short supply these days.

Out of all the guys who played when ELO were in their heyday,I think Mel is the most overlooked. He was often overshadowed by the more flamboyant Hughie and even shy Mik got more credit.I think we ought to give some over due credit to Mel....

This thread got me thinking about other bands that split but the frontman kept the pianist/keyboard player... Bruce Springsteen/Roy Bittan, Mark Knopfler/Guy Fletcher & Lloyd Cole/Blair Cowan, any others? Probably kept in service by the fact they are damn good I suppose!
