Greetings,
Guess I'll kick off the summer for us here, with a pretty cool surf CD. I always liked this CD, and love to dig it out to play in the summer.
Surfonic Water Revival is a unified compilation album of various Christian artists, that was made in 1998.
The link below has all the songs, except for some reason there is accidentally some other "Thrill Seeker" song in the place of the actual "Thrill Seeker" on the CD, so I put the actual "Thrill Seeker" link first before the CD to make sure you get to hear it. It's one of the funner songs, so don't miss it; I suggest to play it first, so you don't forget to!
The theme of the album, conceptualized by Terry Taylor (mega-talent leader/producer of Daniel Amos, The Lost Dogs, and The Swirling Eddies), I believe, is to build on the deeper spiritual meaning of our yearning for the endless summer that The Beach Boys provide us a glimmer of in their music.
He has a lot to say about the concept in his liner notes on the CD.
The album is dedicated to Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys who had, I believe, recently passed away before the CD was made. He dedicated the song "Into the Deep" to Kerry Livgren of Kansas who had had a spiritual conversion to Christianity.
For my comments, I include the artists, since different artist for each, even though Terry Taylor is the main songwriter, and the same house band plays on most of the songs.
01. "Wave Perfect" (Taylor) – Smalltown Poets with Paul Johnson - Cool opening track that seems to be a tribute to Dick Dale.
02. "California Blue" (Taylor) – Brother's Keeper with Phil Keaggy - Fun rocker about the joy of taking the plunge of being baptized.
03. "A Good Sailor Knows" (Taylor) – The Insyderz - Very cool ska tune, very fun, really enjoy it.
04. "Endless Summer (Part 2)" (Taylor) – Chuck Girard with Paul Johnson - Seems to take it's cue from "The Warmth of the Sun". Enjoy the arrangement and vocal.
05. "Surfer Girl Replies" (Taylor) – Plumb - Interesting concept for a song idea, has a few good hooks that kick in to keep it from being boring.
06. "Into the Deep" (Taylor) – Terry Scott Taylor (dedicated to Kerry Livgren) - "Into the deep, that's when your heart gets broken and life begins again." Great great lyric. Probably most of us, have had our heart smashed to pieces at some point in our life, and it has probably been a sobering experience to make us more empathetic and mature, etc.
07. "Thrill Seeker" (Taylor) – Plankeye - Pretty decent standard surf type song with spiritual meaning dimension added to it, which to me is very very cool.
08. "The Sun Comes Down Again" (Taylor) – Randy Stonehill with Havalina Rail Co. - Light fun song, maybe about re-kindled old friendship, that's what it means to me anyways.
09. "Pay For Surf" (Taylor) – Daniel Amos - These guys are a really unique group, that really got their own gig going. This seems to be their typical sound, really unique song with somewhat abstract lyrics. Their guitar guy Greg Fleisch I believe is literally a rocket scientist. I've been meaning to get more of their stuff.
10. "Gold Coast" (Altizer/Liles/Krippayne/Siler) – Rebecca St. James - Nice imagery and vocals, on an OK song.
11. "Sister Mariana Trench" (Taylor) – Silage - Good message, apparently about some prayer warrior whose in deep with The Big Man, maybe?
12. "Surfer's Paradise" (Taylor) – All Star United with Phil Keaggy - Pretty decent rocker with guitar-god Phil Keaggy on guitar. For anyone who hasn't heard of Phil Keaggy, his guitar-playing is off the charts.
13. "Oyster" (Altizer/Liles) – Rick Altizer - I'm sure some deep message, but kind of blah-zay to me.
14. "Last Day of Summer" (Altizer/Liles) – Skillet - Fairly decent rocker, though the thought of the "Last Day of Summer" is depressing, but a decent tune nonetheless.
15. "Caught Inside" (Morginsky/Terusa/Carson) – The O.C. Supertones - A fun instrumental done in the style of the band. I should look up more of their stuff.
16. "The Net" (Taylor) – Lost Dogs with Rich Young Ruler - It's a not so bad, it's a not so great, next song please?
17. "Wave Perfect (Instrumental)" – Paul Johnson on lead guitar - Very cool instrumental version of the opening track!
Star Rating: 4.2 out of 5
Prime Cuts: "Wave Perfect", "A Good Sailor Knows", "Surfer's Paradise", "Into the Deep", "California Blue"
Bottom Line: Very fun album with some lyrics that seem to touch on the spiritual imagery of the surf scene, etc.
I give it my standard 4 out of 5, but bumped it up a couple notches for credit for what I find to be some very good songwriting for the concept, plus some good performances, etc. The array of different singers, and the two instrumentals keep it from sounding repetitive. So 4.2, for me.
