- Cretin hop: good one. Simple and catchy, with a typical Ramones mantra.
- Rockaway beach: surf rock elements in this punk rock song, particularly audible at the end of the chorus.
- Here today, gone tomorrow: too much “oh, oh, oh” in the verse, and the lyrics are ridiculously simply. Didn’t like this one very much, but it is welcome to cut down a bit the punk barrage, and possibly included because of that.
- Locket love: back to punk, Very enjoyable song, rocks fluently. Some fast chord changes going on.
- I don’t care: this one sounds a bit more hard rock and the distortion seems to be a bit higher than usual. Nothing special. The melody is quite poor.
- Sheena is a punk rocker: one of the ones I already knew. Again, some very audible Beach Boys / surf rock sound in it. Great melody, great strength, great chorus. Everything you look for in a punk rock song.
- We’re a happy family: the melody is very poor, almost spoken more than sung. I don’t like this one.
- Teenage lobotomy: average punk rock song. Not bad, but not much more to say about it.
- Do you wanna dance?: surprising how well this song sounds played in Ramones’ style when the original is so different. It seems like they spotted a melody they could adapt well to the genre.
- I wanna be well: something like punk rock in slow motion. Somewhat silly melody. but not an unpleasant song.
- I can’t give you anything: this one has a clearer and lighter sound than the average Ramones’ stuff. It doesn’t say much in terms of quality though.
- Ramona: fantastic song. Effective melody, with a slightly melancholic touch. Love the “oohs” from the backing vocals on the bridge.
- Surfin’ Bird: terrible song. Completely pointless and sickeningly repetitive. Why make a cover if it’s going to be the worst song of the album?
- Why is it always this way?: good song to close the album. Nothing too original, but it’s dynamic, upbeat and it has a good leit motiv.
I liked this album. I mean, I was not fascinated because I think fascinating music usually has something else than the typical 3 chords, 4 instruments, always same rythm Ramones approach, but you know what to expect when you listen to them, and I like a little Ramones from time to time. That being said, I enjoyed most of it. Yes, at times their punk rock gets too monotonous if you listen too much in the same stretch (that's why I never listen to whole albums but only a couple of songs mixed up with other genres) but there were many decent melodies in there and 3 or 4 very good songs, as good as a punk rock song can get.
