I only recently downloaded the Ash II ELO multimix from the ELO Discovery website and (to my slight surprise) thought it was great. It’s clearly a labour of love, using snippets from all ELO eras and with some very clever mixing in parts. It got me thinking back to 1981 and my own much cruder attempts at something similar. ‘Stars on 45’ was all over the radio back then and (much as I hated that) I thought I’d feed my ELO obsession by trying something similar. All I had was a Sharp cassette deck (one of those with the lever controls), an amp and a record deck. I had a few attempts before I embarked on what I thought would be the ultimate mix, one which would feature every ELO track released from the first album to the latest (Time) joined together. God knows how long it took, putting all the tracks in a fairly random order, looking for those that might join nicely together. There were no crossfades here, just a pile of records, a C120 cassette and speedy finger on the pause lever on the deck..! Despite the limitations, I was pretty pleased with outcome, and remember playing it for years after. I still remember those links that went well, eg. my cut from Sweet Talkin’ Woman into All Over The World: “You got me runnin', you got me searchin'...” / “All over the worrrld…”
I'm sure there were many more cuts that did not work so well tho... The trouble was, C120 tape was notoriously thin and I doubt I used a high quality one, and inevitable warping and variable speed crept in with use. In the end it was unlistenable and got trashed. I kind of wish I’d kept it now, as it might have been salvageable with technology these days. I wondered if any other boardmembers have had a go at this sort of thing?

Not me. I reckon it must take quite some work to make a decent one. What a pity you lost yours or we could have had a listen.
BTW, Ash II's mix is extraordinary, I don't know how many times I've listened to it.

First off Thank you very much , glad you like it. my inspiration was the ELO megamix (b-side to the 12 inch 'Getting to the point') and I too tried mixing the old albums to tape but the results were horrendous (shudder). anyway as time just rolled on and on I discovered PC's , and could mix music just like the pro's so I did three 12'' mixes 1. Don't bring me down (ASH-2 mix) 2. 21st Century man (ASH-II mix) 3. VIDEO (ASH-II mix) Then I tried a mega mix and again failed miserably but I do have that on a cd somewhere and then I realized where I was going wrong....BPM... (beats per minute) so once I had sorted the tracks in beat order , it was just a case of picking the best bits and mixing them together.

No. Well I say no , but the one on Discovery.com is two megamixes spliced into one. but would love to hear them if not by me.

First off Thank you very much , glad you like it. It's incredible that just the day I mention you and your megamix -because Secretmessenger came up with the subject- is the day you happen to register and appear on this forum. Talk about a coincidence (except in the case you were always following the forum and you decided to register because you saw we mentioned you)...

Maybe I have the two parts, the one I have is 19mins 46sec and starts with another heart breaks, the second is 25mins 52secs and starts with Above the Clouds going into Showdown.

Ahh well that is only part 1 (in two parts) that must be pretty old...(and could be crap sounding???) the one on Dicovery.com is over 62 mins long and adds a few more tracks after 'hold on tight' (which was the end of part 1) and also sounds better because I remastered it and used wav files instead of mp3's in the old one.

Many years ago, using vinyl records and cassette tape. Nowhere near as good as Ash's, but considering the primitive nature of my tools, it wasn't bad.

These are great mixes Ash. I really like how you've changed the pitch on Twilight. Keep the good work coming, i would love to hear more of these mixes.
