I was anticipating this song so I've been thinking about my choice for a long while - and I'm still unsure!
It's one of my favourite ELO tracks, at least it's one of the best on BOP. For some reason the alt version reminds me of the Pet Shop Boys which is a good thing.
My vote goes to the alt version simply because it's not the original. Both versions I like equally and they are as good as each other. Each one brings something different to the song.

I like them both too, and the alt version just jumps out as more intense to me. I like the drums as they kick the doors in after the intro. It also adds a bit of a love song element which I like as well. but you mentioned Pet Shop Boys - yes! "It's a Sin" my fav song of theirs!

Has anyone else ever spotted the wrong note that's briefly heard in the final album mix of Heaven Only Knows during the ending? That always irritates me, yet based on the alternate version it appears to have been a later replacement for a vastly superior descending string synthesiser line - I'd love to hear the full, unedited source of this early take, which I've read was supposedly played at a fan convention once along with the similarly unreleased longer Calling America (as featured on one of those Abbey Road CDR acetates sold via eBay a few years back) that included an instrumental break more directly referencing Telstar by The Tornados than the eventually used solo...

It's interesting to note that 'It's a Sin' came out after BOP yet before the alt version.
