Anyone else remember Denny Laine's shambolic set? His keyboard kept failing him on numerous occasions!

Ah, I was up in the seats to the left of the stage. At one point Bev and Geezer Butler came and sat behind us, they were both a lot bigger than I was expecting, how random.
I remember the logo being absolutely horrible, the sort of thing that would give an adult nightmares, let alone a child.

Shouldn't this thread now change its date 30 years ago, as its nearly upon us. I was there too, a long day and quite a wait to see ELO, which, lets face it, was what 99% of us were there for, not The Applejacks,Jim Davidson or Denny Laine (who was so inept he was on the verge of getting booed off!)
By the way, this wasn't actually the first Heartbeat benefit held for the Birmingham Children's Hospital.Several months earlier in October '85, Bev organised a smaller show held at Edwards No.8 nightclub in Birmingham. Jasper and Bev hosted it with,if I recall correctly Steve Gibbons, The Fortunes,Roy Wood and a few comics like Jim Davidson. The club was owned by the notorious Birmingham "businessman" and night club owner Eddie Fewtrell. Jasper joked that when Eddie Fewtrell "asked" you to do a charity concert, you didn't say no, unless you wanted to end up supporting a flyover on the M6!

Does anyone have a specific date and perhaps even a complete list of featured artists for the earlier show in October 1985? I've heard details about this before, though never anything solid. Bev organised the Heart Beat campaign to help raise £1m for Birmingham Children's Hospital, which included selling the Tandy Morgan Band's Action! single plus negotiating to have the later March '86 concert broadcast on the BBC, ITV and even MTV along with a radio "simulcast," looking to mirror the success of Live Aid. Naturally, this will be getting a lot of coverage in my book, so I'd love to have as much accuracy as possible...
P.S. I know The Move dressed as gangsters early in their existence, but it seems as if Bev had connections to a few wannabe mobsters back in the day, with Eddie Fewtrell and Don Arden both having quite the reputations!

I'll have to check with my brother who was with me that night, but sadly I can't remember the full-line-up as it was 30 years ago and it wasn't what you would call star-studded just mostly local acts who could attend and a few guest stars here and there.
One thing I noticed at the Hearbeat NEC show, was that there was at least one film cameraman there,(aside from the BBC cameras) shooting 16mm footage of the day. It wasn't TV news as they were there too, so I assume he was working for the organisers producing a documentary of the show. So somewhere in the vaults there may be another record of that day.

I was looking at my programme from Hearbeat and noticed the opening paragraph to the blurb about ELO.:
"ELO return to live performances, after four years, picking up the strands of superstardom they voluntarily gave up ".
Hmm, not sure who wrote that, but apart from Jeff, perhaps, I don't think they or anyone else would "voluntarily" give it up .

"strands of superstardom"? Ouch. Strands, another word for threads. The whole comment is uncaring and ignorant.

To be fair, "picking up the strands" is a normal expression in artistry for resuming where you left off a particular course or stage of activity.
