I was an avid Swap Shop fan back in the day but I can't remember this. A shame that the interview was cut short, I'd have loved to have known what was in the sack and what great swaps by Mik and Mel (didn't rate Hughies swap though) the full clip must be available somewhere...

Awww, Mel looks about 14 in that clip, what a sweetie with his brave little moustache I know! Mel must have been around 25 when this was filmed so either it was early days or it was just bumfluff....

Now here's a curio that I came across purely by chance when it popped up in my Youtube recommendations as I wallow too much in 60s/70s/80s nostalgia. For those who don't know or remember, The Multi-Coloured Swap Shop was a live Saturday morning kids show on BBC1 with guests, cartoons etc but the main purpose was to allow viewers to call or write in, in order swap items they no longer wanted with others (no money involved, swaps only). They also used to do a live outside broadcast from somewhere in the UK and then invite locals to come down to swap stuff with each other (yes, I know..but it seemed to work, sort of). Anyway on this particular December 1976 show, the location guests were: Mik,Melvin and Hughie! Clearly Jeff, Bev, Richard and Kelly had no intention of getting up early on a freezing Saturday morning in December, to stand in a muddy, rugby field in Swansea (with Keith Chegwin!), so they sent the string section! The crowds do turn up later, obviously mostly to get their faces on national tv, and Melvyn does get a swap for his stuff (not sure about Mik and Hugh). Also, nice to see the guys get a bit of attention for once and actually hear them speak! (And I've put it in the ELO section as they were all members at the time.)
I don't remember this one at the time even though I did watch the series sometimes but I was probably watching Tiswas (a much more anarchic and controversial, at the time, kids show ) on ITV and something the BBC could/would never do and anyway, I'd never even heard of ELO then (I was only eight!)
I've put the (approx) timings down if you don't want to watch the whole thing (its an edit of the original which used to run for about 3 hours, if I recall.
Livin' Thing Video: 12.00
Mik, Melvyn and Hughie (with Keith Chegwin!) 17.40
The crowds show up and Melvyn gets his swap: 50:20

Is that the first time that Mel has spoken on camera? I can't think of any other times...

I've seen later interviews with Mel, when he was much older, but never that one before. Thanks for finding it Horace, Mel looks so cute.

I actually appeared on swap shop in around '76 or '77. At the time my scout leader was a renowned outdoor cook. One of the other leaders was a BBC cameraman and happened to mention this to one of the producers of MCSS >>Fast fwd and I'm in the woods showing Delia Smith (who was the resident chef) how to roast wood pigeon in clay. I've looked for the clip everywhere. It's in the BBC archives somewhere but they want a fortune to search and provide a copy of the video.

I probably saw that particular show, I was an avid watcher of MCSS. Delia wasn't drunk was she? Lol
