Great little video.
Sam Smith to pay royalties to Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne - report
Posted: Sunday 25 Jan 2015 Pop star SAM SMITH has reportedly agreed to pay out royalties to rockers TOM PETTY and JEFF LYNNE over his hit single STAY WITH ME. The track was released in April (14) and fans were quick to point out similarities between the chart hit and the 1989 song I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.
Petty and Lynne wrote the original, and The Sun on Sunday newspaper reports they will now both receive a writing credit on Smith's track, which is up for Best Pop Performance and Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles next month (Feb15).

That's interesting, thanks Ted, hopefully Jeff won't earn too much from the royalties as it might stop him touring!!

I knew this song sounded familiar when I first heard it!

It's great news that Jeff and Tom are getting the credit they deserve; that song is surely a rip-off. I might have liked that Smith song had I not known my Petty-melodies so well. The integrity of Smith's music has now been spoiled for me.
I don't understand - If he really did rip off the tune from 'I Won't Back Down' why not acknowledge it on the credits to begin with? The cool-points he would have earned would have been worth it. After all, Jeff/Tom fans are too eagle-eared to miss the clues. And if it was a genuine coincidence that the tunes sounded the same, why is Smith not standing his ground for his art? Even when a Grammy is at stake? It doesn't make Smith seem very reliable.
This issue reminds me of the 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' case where Matthew Fisher claimed he'd had a hand in writing the song and managed to win a court case to get his name put on the credits. Things like that are always messy.
Does this mean Jeff and Tom could get a Grammy?

Classy reply from Jeff. I think with such a blatant case they had no choice other than to sue the guy. Of course, it's not an accident.
BTW, I don't know why but it seems to me like the guy's voice doesn't fit his face/physical appearance at all.

Weren't Tom and Jeff faced with a similar lawsuit, years ago, by someone who said they plagiarized "Running Down A Dream"?

Man, they ask him the dumbest questions. I feel sorry for him. Weren't they the people who asked him a few years ago, "Jeff, do you think there's life on other planets?" to which he replied, "Umm...I hope so" Classic Jeff I hope he gets good recognition at the Grammy's.

I liked the way he made an effort to state his opinion, despite the way they badgered him. The man is a legend, end of smiley-cool15

Time and time again, Jeff handles these encounters so dignified. Well done Jeff.

Did the driver get paid? Which Driver? Was he a real driver? Who paid him? Was the money in Jeff's hand change, or did he forget to pay him at all? I MUST KNOW! It's driving me bonkers

How dare this guy grab the door handle of Jeff's car and keep the door open when it's obvious Jeff wants to leave? I think I would have asked him to please shut the door but Jeff got out of the car again and answered a few more questions. Looks like he's a really patient man.

Exactly. The paparazzi are dreadful and think it's entirely OK to do that sort of thing, and worse, just to get a picture or a quote. When people on the receiving end quite rightly lose their temper the hacks whine and say "we're only doing our job, leave us alone". No, YOU show some respect! Or take the consequences.
