For the uninitiated, KGLW are an Australian psych rock band who are far more than that. They are the antithesis of Mr Lynne in terms of output having released 18 studio albums since 2012 plus a 9 tack EP and a 10 track compliation of early non-album tracks. Unlike many bands who will have a song on their latest album that is Jazz influenced or has thrash metal elements, KGLW will make an entire album in that style then a few months later move on. Their latest is a synth dream pop album released in May, but according to a recent chat one of the band members let it be known that they have already completed two more albums but not sure which will be released first. But don't think this amount of output results in low quality - it is all top stuff and not knocked out in a hurry. If curious, checkout the following albums which are some of my faves, but I love them all (except for Float Along, Fill Your Lungs. I just cannot get into that one).
Paper Mache Dream Balloon - Folk rock ish Sketches on Brunswick East - Jazz influenced Infest the Rats Nest - Thrash metal Gumboot Soup - a mixture of styles Polygondwanaland - prog Butterfly 3000 - synth pop

A tiny selection - so many to choose from when there are 18 albums!

Mr Musette is a big fan of this bunch, what a surprise to see a thread about them here though. Nice one!

That it interesting, what with ole being a fan maybe there are some parallels between ELO and KGLW that has a cross-over appeal. A broad minded taste in music as long as it is underpinned by strong melodies maybe? Comparing the first ELO album to Xanadu and then to Time, there is a broad spectrum of styles there as well.

One of my favourite ever quotes (not that I know who said it) is that there are only two sorts of music, good and bad

Ah Gizz!! I love them so!!
Dude, FAFYL is one of my favs of theirs.
I think my top 3 are Butterfly, Fishies and Nonagon.
What I love about these guys is their sense of adventure/fun/creativity. Some of these albums are not exactly Sgt Pepper, and they know it. They are willing to throw eggs at a wall, and see which ones stick. Even the ones that don't stick are still very interesting failures to me.
I think I might be the only Gizz fan I know that thinks Fishies is one of the very best. That one got overlooked imho.

Those are not necessarily my top favourites but a list of recommendations to get a flavour of what they do. You are not alone though, Fishies is one of my go to albums, especially side 2. I also really like most of the tracks on Gumboot as they are so varied. But I must be honest, I love all the albums including Eyes Like the Sky so it is not easy to pick a top 5. However, for whatever reason, I just do not get Float Along and I have listened to it many times. Nonagon has so much to unveil as you listen to it again and again. I will persevere with Float Along and maybe one day it will click. Oh, and my vinyl copy of Butterfly 3000 finally arrived today, the Turkish variant, so maybe this means it is about time for the next album to be announced

God I love Butterfly. I was a bit meh on the releases since Fishies. Rats Nest, KG, and LW are middle-tier Gizz imho. But with Butterfly they knocked it out of the park. I can't stop playing it. It is my Summer 2021 soundtrack.

While we wait for some new music from Mr Lynne - he did say he is working on some new stuff a while ago - KGLW have been even busier than usual this year releasing 5 (FIVE) new studio albums, including 3 in October. They have generally been really well received by critics and as usual follow a mixture of styles and concepts. Links to wikipedia and my summaries: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_in_Timeland - a 30 minute album of two 15 minute tracks, each a mostly instrumental electronic journey through various recurring melodies and themes. If you liked Art of Noise you may well like this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omnium_Gatherum_(album) - a double album and probably their most accessible, full of good tiunes almost 4 minute pop songs. Starts with an epic 17 minute guitar based prog like track just to contradict what I just wrote. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice,_Death,_Planets,_Lungs,_Mushrooms_and_Lava - a seven track album based around the 7 greek musical modes. All long jazz-proggy songs with some real highlights especially Iron Lung (nothing to do with the Radiohead song) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laminated_Denim - a follow up to Made In Timeland, but not. Two 15 minute tracks but guitar based “jams” this time. Worth a listen but not on my favourites en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changes_(King_Gizzard_%26_the_Lizard_Wizard_album) - a sort of jazz album based around specific chord progressions. Accessible and really rewards repeated listening.
