When it comes to the double album, I have more faith in The Bug Club than Sony...After All,they made an awesome job with SM I wish they're lucky enough to get those acetates

Well, that was the 40th anniversary of Time then.
Anybody fancy a pint?

It's wild to think that Time came a mere two years after Discovery, as those two albums sound so dramatically different from each other. Probably the biggest stylistic leap in the whole ELO catalogue.

Our best hope is with the cutting tape used to produce those, or perhaps a higher generation copy of this source...

Can't believe it's been 40 years. Summer of 1981. Let's see, I had just finished my freshman year of college and was probably working for the summer. I remember that I had to give the record a few plays on the turntable before I fell in love with it, as I was so used to the "classic" sound of A New World Record and Out of the Blue. Great album though, very much ahead of its time (no pun intended).

I was blown away when I found the cassette, then played it in my friend's room, on his gigantic system, while I was an instructor at an army cadet camp. In fact, a bunch of friends joined us for a listening party. I know what the popular opinion is, but to my ears then, and now, Time is a huge advance, in terms of songwriting, lyrics, production. (I know I'll get crucified for that. I adore ANWR, OOTB, etc, but Time is just plain better, imho.) Lynne went toe to toe with the synth bands, AND HE COMPLETELY KICKED EVERYONE'S ASS!!!
One of those friends borrowed the cassette - I could hear it coming from his room - over and over and over - he kept playing Prologue/Twilight. He rewound after Twilight, because he was completely obsessed with that part of the album.
I had to get a new cassette some weeks later.

Time was the album that really triggered my love for ELO, I'd bought various singles since '78 and I too bought the cassette (a bootleg on a market stall in Valletta, Malta) I played it to death and had to buy the vinyl a few months later....

Here stateside in America, ELO's Time album and MTV pretty much share anniversaries or birthdays, a £40,000 music video like "Hold On Tight" should have been on there its first day, they must have known about the cable network's upcoming premiere date ahead of time, it was made for just such an occasion, but alas, another opportunity lost, anyway, Happy 40th to both!

After hearing "Hold On Tight" on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 Mighty 690 AM Radio Show back in August 1981 while with family around Ventura, California, a U.S. Route 101 road trip to Santa Barbara's Mission when I was just 8 years old, Dad then bought me my very first Electric Light Orchestra album from Tower Records, an audio cassette of Time by ELO, thus started the fandom 40 years ago! PS-I really want a release of Time's 2 LP more than ever for sentimental reasons as Dad passed away on April 7th, 2020, not COVID, but collateral damage of it.

Those acetates are in an even better condition than the ones containing the early version of Secret Messages, and someone recently surfaced to suggest that the tape source offers more of an improvement. The problem is that the discs are in the possession of someone known for being tighter than a duck's back end, while copies of that cassette are naturally reluctant to let go of what has now become the new holy grail in ELO collecting circles. Considering how long it took to acquire all the necessary pieces to restore Secret Messages, it could be years until Time receives the same treatment. Then again, my inbox is always open...

The existence of those acetates doesn't just confirm it, but reveals that at least two sources may still be out there... Not to be unnecessarily picky, but unless the contents of those (or any other) acetates are known how can anyone say that with such certainty?

The owner of those acetates kindly provided a list detailing their contents, which matches what appears to be on them, going by several high resolution images that even show the banding: 18 songs split over four sides, with two of these being undocumented (and certainly not anything recognised as being recycled later), plus another two known tracks described as having alternate mixes.
