What a cool plane! I love airshows. We have a very good show at our local airport. Haven't' been to one in a few years, so I'm putting this on our summer list.

Love a Vulcan, they are indeed beautiful and so LOUD!!! Why have they stopped flying them? I recall watching a TV programme with Guy Martin where he trained to fly one but in the end was only allowed to taxi it down the runway, it was a shame because I'm sure he could have done it.

I recall watching a TV programme with Guy Martin where he trained to fly one but in the end was only allowed to taxi it down the runway, it was a shame because I'm sure he could have done it. The fleet was retired from front line service in 1984 but various ones carried on into the 90's doing air shows until they were all finally grounded. A campaign to get one more to fly was started in the early 2000's and XH558 was chosen because of it's well preserved state. The plan was to return it to the skies for only 10 years and this duly came to an end in 2018, XH558 still taxi's at Doncaster/Sheffield airport and can be seen in a specially designed hangar and museum.

Why though? Was it to do with the noise level? Think I recall Concorde having trouble because of the noise too

The reason was good old 'elf and safe tea' regulations in the UK, the aircraft were all at least 40 years old and deemed dangerous to fly due to things like metal fatigue etc. Plus they weren't needed in the RAF anymore so why spend money keeping them airworthy? there are still a few that do taxi runs but sadly the Vulcans will never fly again...

This is my favourite clip of the Vulcan, shot by an enthusiast. If you can, play this at full volume to get the full effect of the noise those engines make....
