Why do some states have straight borders and some have jagged borders and some have both?

aren't borders a mash up everywhere? people argued over them until someone, often the courts, settled the matter As a high schooler, I even got to attend a session of the US Supreme Court where California and Nevada were arguing over their border. I think water rights were one of the points of contention. in Maryland, the southern border with Virginia follows the zigs and zags of the Potomac River, with a little cut out for the land ceded to the Federal government to create Washington DC the northern border with Pennsylvania is straight and is named after the 2 English blokes (Mr Mason and Mr Dixon) that surveyed it to settle a dispute between the states. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mason%E2%80%93Dixon_linethe western border is a N/S line starting at the headwaters of the Potomac and ending where it bisects the Mason-Dixon line the eastern border is the Atlantic ocean - which stubbornly refuses to keep the beaches in a fixed position
