I think about this a lot. The first time it really hit was straight after I saw ELO in 2016. I walked out of the arena and realised nothing was going to beat the feeling of a Jeff Lynne concert and that Jeff was the only band/musician left who I ever wanted to see. George was gone and the chances of Tom playing in the UK was slim (and now he's gone too). Queen are still going though so I may see them, but not with Freddie sadly. And with this virus thing knocking about who knows when we can go out and enjoy music again while the artists are still mobile?
I've been lucky enough to see some great artists but all of them have been old. I'm too young to worry about there being no more heroes but I do. Almost all modern musicians and famous people have little appeal for me. They seem to have little sincerity and have too much awareness of themselves. I don't see how anyone playing music today can be a genius like John Lennon. He had time to perfect his craft while kids today are too busy playing Minecraft to bother with a guitar.

There are a lot of young artists these days that I like but don't love them enough to go and see them. I'm more inclined to go to a 70s or 80s festival than go see a young artist these days....

Ok, this won't be everyone's cup of tea (the music, that is) but there are few times when I've shaken the hand of one of my heroes. It was 1995, and I'd dragged a few family members along to the Hammersmith Apollo to see the extended version of the Eurovision interval act from the year before. Middle of the front row, looking up at the stage. "Why did you book THESE seats?! We can't see ANYTHING!" Big sis was NOT impressed. Point taken. Funny, though, she was on her feet at the end clapping like a wild thing I digress... My hero played the pipes and the low whistle in the band. Here is Davy Spillane, with the instrumental from the first Act, recorded during the show's run earlier that year at The Point in Dublin... The band was in no hurry to leave the stage at the end. That's when I shook Davy's hand One of Ireland's greatest living musicians. I'd love to say that haven't washed that hand since... but I can't

Nice story, glad you could achieve that moment! I once shook the hand of the bassist of a favourite band of mine 'The Icicle Works' back in 1987 and I was just like you.

Our heroes... they're human, like the rest of us. Only moreso Before I forget, here's Davy on the low whistle at the start of the second Act of said show. A song about emigration... leaving home forever...

I've shaken hands with a few musical heroes, it's something most people don't mind doing but it's quite an intimate experience when you consider those hands have produced the songs you love. They are trusting their precious digits to you though, so no squeezing!

Toots knows this story, and I might be repeating, Alice Cooper shook Dave's hand. (Dave seems to think it was Alice who felt privilege.)

Trying to remember if I've met any famous singers/musicians aside from Franc D'Ambrosio (Phantom of the Opera)... smileys-whistling-823718

There are a lot of young artists these days that I like but don't love them enough to go and see them. I'm more inclined to go to a 70s or 80s festival than go see a young artist these days.... I periodically go through phases where I try to listen to more young artists--after all, as someone with a far-off dream of joining their ranks and knowing how hard it is to build a following, I want to be able to support some of the up-and-coming acts--but it never lasts for very long because I tend to agree with you. If you look beyond what's popular, there's plenty of new stuff that's good, but I've yet to find anything that's amazing which resonates as much with me as the old stuff does.
