Since going to concerts has not been possible for the past year, and may not be an option in the near future, I thought it might be fun to share some of our favorite (non-ELO related) live music performances. Since I missed both the Doobie Brothers' and Hall and Oates' concerts last summer , I've been listening to both of these full length concerts a lot over the past few months. These are both stellar performances that I don't think I'll ever tire of! I also saw Angelique Kidjo live a few years ago in my area, and would love to see her again.
#1 The Liberty Concert, NY/NJ 1985
I love Daryl Hall to pieces, but I can't stand his dancing nor the mullet and sideburns look he's sporting in this video. Once he opens his mouth and starts singing, though, all is forgiven. I watched this concert on TV while I was home for the summer in 1985, and it was a blast!
#2 Doobie Brothers in Santa Barbara, CA 1982
The Doobies are truly amazing in this concert from 1982. I know the lineup changed quite a bit over the years, but this was an incredibly talented group! Sadly, some of the musicians in this video have already passed away, including the very impressive Mr. Cornelius Bumpass (sax, keyboards and backing and lead vocals).
#3 Peter Gabriel with Youssou N'Dour and Angelique Kidjo in Cape Town, South Africa 2003
Finally, this concert footage is of Peter Gabriel onstage with the great Youssou N'Dour and the amazing Angelique Kidjo (not to mention the Soweto Gospel Choir) in 2003 at the charity 46664 Concert honoring Nelson Mandela and raising money and awareness about HIV/AIDS. Three musical giants on one stage, singing an extended version of "In Your Eyes!" Although this was not Ms. Kidjo's top performance, this is a such wonderful song, and the joy and the synergy of the three of them onstage together is just delightful; it makes me feel so hopeful! Bonus: You can catch glimpses of Mandela in the audience.
Enjoy!
